I agree with Jane's comments. The Punisher was decent, but War Zone was horrible. And it did make considerably less than Jane's movie (like, a lot less) so he's kinda right in his assessment that War Zone killed the franchise, even though clearly it's being given another chance.

i liked half of war zone... stuff with the punisher was good. he was quick and efficient... as soon as jigsaw popped on screen it was like watching Dick Tracy. lighting was different, costumes were different, acting got uber cheesy... it was awful with jigsaw and his dopey green mile brother.

but the punisher, kicked ass... i think... i can't remember much more than jigsaw sucked, punisher was good, special features were good.

get Luc Besson (Taken) to write it and Michael Davis (Shoot 'em up) to direct and you've got yourself an action film.

So out of curiosity I was wondering what Dolph's movie did at the box office.

Was it released theatrically?

Although it wasn't released theatrically in the United States due to New World Pictures' bankruptcy, the movie opened in theaters in most territories.

I scan of Marvel Movies on BOM doesn't show it listed.
Even the Man-Thing movie is listed and that was a glorified DDVD+1 by being debuted on Sci-Fi channel.

I actually liked the Dolph Lundgren version the best. Jane's was to vanilla and I agree with the poster who said War Zone entered Dick Tracey level cheese when Jigsaw showed up. Dolph's version had him looking drunk and burned out with nothing to loose and it had fucking ninja's, plus Luis Gossett Jr as the relentless ex partner trying to save his old friend. Not a perfect film, but a pretty good one. I had the cassette, probably still do, but I don't think I have vhs player to play it on.

I remember Dolph saying in an interview that the studio didn't want him to wear the skull t-shirt because they thought that being associated with a comic book would harm the movie's box office. That must be why the 1989 version of Batman flopped, said the interviewer dryly.

Was there a different deal in place with Lionsgate than say FOX and SONY? Don't those have 5yr lease agreements?

Does anyone know what allowed Punisher rights to revert back, seemingly, so soon?

Count me among those who like the War Zone version as the best actual adapted Punisher movie. Yes its zaney in places but the best actual adaptation of the comic.
Heck the Lundgren version is close for its day, the Punisher logo on his chest would've really sold it. The Jane version was too much typical Hollywood revenge flick that could've been anybody.

I can't see how anybody could like Tomas Jane's Punisher over Ray Stevenson's. Everything about it was wrong..........and what a waste of Roy Scheider's talent.
However, I don't think we need a 4th version of the Punisher.
I feel Marvel needs to wake up and understand, not all their characters translate well on film.

A Punisher movie would have to bring something unique to the table since, movie-wise, Charles Bronson's done it. Liam Neeson's done it. Kevin Bacon's done it. Hell, Dustin Hoffman's done it.

Chalk me up as another one who thinks War Zone was the best actual adaptation of the source material. Jane's Punisher was too squeaky-clean.

The Lundgren version is entertaining but so very '80's.

That Jigsaw stuff in War Zone was pretty fucking ridiculous, though. Great Punisher, laughable villain. Then again, Castle's rogues gallery has never been all that stellar.

They should do some kinda crazy crossover, like Hulk vs. Punisher or Punisher vs. SHIELD or some shit.

Aragorn fills in the question here but here is more on why, I think, Punisher is set to return again.

It's because Hollywood has done this film so many times in so many varied ways. The character is set up to translate, it just hasn't really hit for whatever reason. Too loose and not tied in to its source(Lundgren), Too watered down and clean(Jane) or So zany that by the time it was released audiences thought they knew enough to pass on it.

It's what in hindsight made Blade such a natural adaptation even though I like others said, "What Blade, why?". Hollywood had been doing Vamp movies for decades and they got Blade right the first time. Punisher they get portions right each time.

I far prefer the Thomas Jane film over War Zone. The latter is closer to the comics in terms of the level of violence the Punisher uses, but in every other way it's a worse film.
