Never saw WAR ZONE.

The first had some ninja killing. And a ridiculous female yakuza villainess and her aryan hottie assassin adpoted daughter. I think Taratino stole parts of Kill Bill from it (Tarantino steal, big surprise).

The Thomas Jane one was okay, but Travolta sucked (big surprise) and Jane's Punisher was more heroic than vigilante borderline psycho.

A fourth go is just ridiculous. The public ain't buying it. He's not a household name and they aren't willing to cast a big enough actor to compensate for that (Blade being the example, I suppose, before Snipes star fell).

C-level comic characters aren't doing well. Spirit sank. Jonah Hex flopped. Solomon Kane might be released someday (actually a literary character, I know). Kick Ass seemed to underperform.

Interesting, it's the first Punisher movie that most people have never heard of!

The second Punisher (the Tom Jane and Travolta one) was damn good. I haven't seen the first movie, but I did see the 3rd one, War Zone, and damn was it awful.

He oughta be a villain/ambiguously cooperative supporting character in someone else's movie. He's just not that interesting in his own right, and attempts to paint him as a hero are as misguided as he is.

I also enjoyed the Tom Jane film, but I have to agree that the Punisher was a little too sympathetic.

Thomas Jane was at the DC Showcase panel at Comic-Con (he voices Jonah Hex in the animated short) and he was asked about the Punisher (the announcement that Marvel has the rights back hadn't yet been made):

Punisher sequel? "I hit the eject button on a Punisher sequel," Jane said. "Which saved my career at the time. I would not be able to stand in front of you guys today if I had taken the million dollars they offered me. You guys would laugh at me thinking what a d-o-u-c-h-e I was for doing it. It's my job to not do crap and save you guys the trouble. They destroyed the Punisher franchise. I said, 'You guys are killing the Punisher franchise, not with me. Good luck.' Being Hollywood, all things that die are soon resurrected. It's only a matter of time. I would love to get Frank Castle up on screen the way he was meant to be seen. The movie that I did had little brief moments of what Frank Castle was meant to be on the screen. That's why, unfortunately, it's the best of the three films. But a real Punisher movie has not been made yet. I would love nothing more than to stand in front of you guys sometime in the next five years and say, 'Here is the real Punisher. Frank Castle.' God might smile, again. And we'll see what happens."

How did the rights revert back already?
Was there a different deal in place with Lionsgate than say FOX and SONY? Don't those have 5yr lease agreements?

Does anyone know what allowed Punisher rights to revert back, seemingly, so soon?

Count me among those who like the War Zone version as the best actual adapted Punisher movie. Yes its zaney in places but the best actual adaptation of the comic.
Heck the Lundgren version is close for its day, the Punisher logo on his chest would've really sold it. The Jane version was too much typical Hollywood revenge flick that could've been anybody.

Never saw the Dolph Lundgren version, but I liked both of the recent ones. They were stupid, but in a fun '80s action movie kinda way. The violence was so over-the-top that I actually laughed out loud at some scenes.

Travolta was a baddie in the first of the recent movie versions. He also does a sort of Punisher-ish character in From Paris With Love as well.
