I think that Tuvok is one of the best aspects of VOY. I always enjoyed the Tuvok focused episodes, especially the one where he had to communicate why he could not reciprocate feelings for an alien woman (cannot remember the name of the episode
). Such a rich dynamic for that character.I know "Endgame" gets a lot of flak, but Tuvok losing his mind was the most tragic touch to me. And, even when faced with it, Tuvok (in the current time with Admiral Janeway) is still willing to accept that fate. Give that Vulcan the Captain Pike medal.

"Gravity" This summer I saw this ep for the first time. Loved it! I had such a moment of "oh, THIS is why people like this character."
Thank you! I didn't get the chance to look it up but that episode just is top to bottom an illustration of why Tuvok is great.
I also like Tuvok. Great character and great performance by Tim Russ.
Tuvok was great as a Vulcan. Underrated too, in my opinion. I think it takes a special skill to portray a Vulcan- to be emotionless and still convey a personality.
They also had a dynamic with Tuvok and Neelix similar to Spock and McCoy. Neelix constantly annoyed him, but he tried hard not to show it. Also underrated.

Tuvok made Neelix tolerable. Think about that.

I always thought Neelix was a valuable member of the crew that helped keep them together. I hear a lot about how either worthless he was or annoying.
The last episode he was in when he found other Talaxians and decided to stay with them was among the most touching.
I have to resist the urge to point out how illogical some things were in that episode though, it's so easy with this show.
I feel like Neelix gets too much hate.
There are times when he could be annoying, but look at the reasons behind his actions.
His entire family was killed in a war, and he never really felt like he belonged anywhere. Until Voyager came along. His ultra cheerfulness and eager to help people and mske them feel better and to be useful to the crew can easily be explained by the loss of his family. Sort of like his own therapy for dealing with his loss.
Exactly why it explains, retroactively, in TNG's "Dark Page" when we learn Lwaxana lost her firstborn in a drowning accident. Then her husband dies a few short years later. Of course she is going to come across as overbearing to Deanna and over the top exuberant to everyone else because she lost almost her whole family. I can't imagine a worse pain for a parent than the death of their child, especially a young one. I thought it was a great episode for her in a season that left a bit to be desired.
In some ways, I think Lwaxana was a prototype for Neelix... and I strongly feel he was an homage to her.
So for this thread, I am adding Neelix as a positive thing for VOYAGER, and my praise to Ethan Phillips for his portrayal.

Neelix' defining character trait is a deep need to feel wanted.
In the sense of being useful and valued.
That's why he got involved in the shady stuff he did, in Fair Trade.
He very much wants to contribute, and occasionally he did, using his local knowledge as well as his ship to assist the Voyager crew.
He stayed on with Voyager, because he had no family and Talax was devastated and defeated. He seriously talked quite a few times about a potential life on earth.

Q figured out that Neelix is in love with Janeway.
He wants to be valued and wanted by Janeway as a woman who loves a kitcherat.

It showed a captain making errors, The Year of Hell would have been prevented if Janeway listened to the Kremin and not invaded their space. Moral of those episodes Trespassers will be wiped out of history

Anorax was going to keep shuffling time, whenever, so Janeway would keep showing up on the border of Krenim space, until Anorax and his weapon was taken out of play.
It didn't matter what choice she made at the border, go around, go back or push forward, this was a respawn point no matter what she did, unless she sidelined Anorax.

Janeway had to make a choice early on how they would proceed to foreign territories, and there's really only one way to do it- You must go straight through them unless there's a better alternative that doesn't add time to the journey. If they come upon a large hostile territory, going around it would add a lot of time to the journey, and could just put them in another hostile alien territory, and might be even more dangerous.
I think in Year of Hell, they found a disputed territory, where the actual state who governed it was friendly to Voyager, and the Krenim who disputed it couldn't put up a fight against Voyager. Then that state was erased from history, and the now powerful Krenim didn't give Voyager the option to leave, and that's when the ship got all messed up.

There is all the credit to Ethan Phillips for his portrayal. There are some Neelix episodes that work incredibly well and cement his relationship with the crew. There are just as many (if not more) where Neelix claims to know something and gets people hurt because he doesn't actually.
But, in the spirt of the thread Neelix and Tuvok were a great back and forth.
I rewatched the pilot recently, and you can see the 'odd couple' vibe from them right from the start. They did gave some great and fun scenes and episodes together. I especially loved Tuvok's words to him in "HOMESTEAD" when they were in Astrometrics... and his 'dance' at the end.
You could tell they were aiming for that chemistry from the start. And they carried it throughout the series.
You won't understand the "Tuvok dance" unless you've seen their interactions over the years.
It so underrated, it should be one of the most memorable scenes of the series.
I still think its absolutely crazy that Voyager gets more views on Netflix than DS9 and airs on BBCA, but one good thing is all the underrated and underappreciated episodes will get another look again.
If they finally stop watching Endgame that is.

It had a solid first season, much more than TNG, DISCOVERY, or ENTERPRISE. I might put it neck and neck with DS9. The best first season goes to TOS.
And I include the 4 holdover episodes because it was produced as such... "THE 37's" would be a better episode had it been used as the finale, and "PROJECTIONS" was excellent. "ELOGIUM" and "TWISTED" had flaws, but both had some good character beats and the ideas behind them were good.
A first season of any series is going to go through growing pains, trying to figure out what works or not. But VOYAGER had and found a lot of strengths in their first season, and that should not go unnoticed.
