The Over 40s Club meeting

Which, for whatever reason, puts me in mind of all the great skits from the Carol Burnett show. It was a treat, to get to stay up with mom and dad and watch it. In addition to all the more famous recurring skits and the movie parodies (which I loved), I always enjoyed the TV commercial parodies they did.

The CB show was so funny. I particularly loved how Harvey Korman and Tim Conway would never be able to keep a straight face during some of their skits! That was always hilarious!

Okay, now it's my turn to need some help with a memory here.

There was a cartoon (possibly religious, too?) with a guy riding a red scooter or motorcycle and he had a dog. He wore these metal wrist bands and when he banged them together he'd turn into some kind of super powered hero guy and his dog turned into a lion.

Sound familiar to anyone? My Google mojo didn't work for this one.
I don't remember watching it, but the thing with the wristbands sounded vaguely familiar and your description led me to a show called either Samson & Goliath or sometimes Young Samson & Goliath.

THAT'S IT!!!

Thank you! Now I know why I think of this cartoon everytime a conversation about Davey and Goliath comes up (which happens with surprising frequency.)
There was another animated show called Shazzan which premiered on the same date, and I do remember that we watched that one regularly. According to one thing I read the other day, the success of Space Ghost the year before for Hanna-Barbera convinced them that they needed to make more magical-superhero shows.

I've never been able to find it on YouTube anywhere, but I recall a skit which had Conway as a general reviewing the troops and Korman as the brigade commander or captain standing at attention in front of his formation of soldiers. I don't think a word was spoken by either of them during the whole thing, and by the end of two or three minutes, Conway had completely demolished Korman -- it was a thing of beauty to watch.

The first thing I ever remember completely laughing my ass off over were those parodies of Euell Gibbons that the Carol Burnett show used to do where he would basically eat anything in the world including the furniture:guffaw:.(Euell Gibbons and his Grape Nuts are another thing only those of us over 40 will remember).

Huh. I remember Space Ghost vividly, but don't recall Shazzan at all. Even after watching the clip, it didn't ring any bells. And here I thought I'd seen 'em all. ;)

I'm pretty sure I remember that one, as well. Used to love those Conway-Korman sketches.

Agreed. If you watch far enough into that first YouTube clip I posted, you'll see the Euell Gibbons bit you're thinking of. :bolian:

The heck with the TV and music stuff.

We had a circus in the local park. We had one girl who was double or triple jointed, she could tie herself into a knot...and a boy who could do triple somersalts before hitting the ground on his feet.

We even strung a rope high off the ground between 2 trees for a high-wire act, but somebody's Mother came running out screaming at us, and forced us to lower it to 12 inches above the ground...can't imagine why...

We had a Punch and Judi puppet show, too...the stage was made out of cardboard from someone who had gotten a stove, I think.

Admission was 5 cents. We thought we were rich...:D

That actually sounds really cool. We didn't have that, but I do have very fond memories of our annual County Fair in August every year. The rides were cool, of course, but I was always into the livestock exhibits and the amazing scenes the Granges would create with grains and vegetables and such. And the food. Oh My God, the food! There was the stand with the home made applesauce donuts, and the BBQ and the cotton candy and caramel apples and my personal favorite, the Waffle Dog. It was like a corndog, but the batter was different: fluffier. SO GOOD!!! And they had this really thick and grainy yellow mustard in buckets that you'd slather on the dog with a paint brush. I've never seen them anywhere since.

John Picard, I vividly remember watching the Kukla, Fran and Ollie show but, while I do remember Sherry Lewis and Lambchop, I can't say I remember ever watching the show.

^ "May Euell Gibbons eat your shoe trees." - Karnac the Magnificent

:guffaw:

Karnac's insults were legendary:

"May a weird holy man squirt holy water on your sister."

"May a crazed desert wasp spin a cocoon in your sock drawer."

Yup, the Karnac quotes were classic!

I had a Lamb Chop puppet when I was small; I loved both Kukla, Fran and Ollie...and Lambchop, I think I liked Lamb chop the best, though

^^ I have a Lamb Chop puppet now.

I also used to watch The Carol Burnett Show all the time. Loved Harvey Korman and Tim Conway together. Loved Tim Conway's "Old Man" character. Crash. Pause. "I'm fallling." :rommie:

I actually just watched a few episodes of Space Ghost recently. It's on On Demand, on one of the Cartoon Channels; I forget which one. Great show. :D

It would appear that The Carol Burnett Show is the hands down favorite of the group. I was around 9 or 10 when it was on TV and didn't understand the humor then (duh), but my parents and older brothers would howl with laughter to the point of being in tears.

Who could forget Mr Tudball and "Misses-ehhHWiggins"?

I used to catch the end of Davey & Goliath on Sunday mornings because it was on just before Hercules. Creeped me the hell out. :wtf:

Hercules, though was cool:

"Iron in his thighs." :rommie:

I'll do you one better:

My brother and I loved this one!

John, you're starting to scare me a little bit. I was literally just going to post the same thing. We had this big "morale booster" Halloween costume gig at work and I tried to get my Administrative Assistant to go as Mrs. Wiggins and I was going to be Mr. Tudball. But, she was too young and didn't get the reference. She gave me one of these. :vulcan:

Loved the Herculoids, too. Though, I always thought the Shmoos were sort of an odd addition to that group.
