And another story (this one is an old Ocampan "fairy tale" translated by Kes):
The Proscar (an Ocampa “fairy tale”)
The Proscar is a region on the Ocampa homeworld. Long ago, it was known for it’s lush forest, inhabited by a number of species.
One of the species was called “Pemur”. It was a mammal - like species (note: similar to Earth’s lemurs) living both in the ground and in the trees.
It is rumored that, once, these Pemurs were organized in societies, similar to the Ocampan kingdoms. Said kingdoms were spread all over the Proscar.
One such kingdom was once ruled by a Pemur named Kelian, the 12th of his name. He wasn't a good leader. Under the excuse of a threat from the predators, he oppressed his people, keeping them confined to a small area, not allowing exploration missions and loud behavior of any kind. He would not hesitate to sacrifice any of his subject for his own gain.
His nephew and hair, also named Kelian (the 13th), realized this. He was a good - hearted Pemur and disliked his uncle's actions. He decided to do something with it. He enlisted help with a male Pemur called Palisem and a female Pemur named Coles (who he had a small crush on). Together, they managed to trick his uncle into abdicating the throne on him. After that, reforms were instutated, with more things allowed, oppression lefted and a defense force created led by Coles.
But his uncle eventually realized he was tricked and wanted to return to power. Many other enemies also arose. From all over the Proscar.
Over years, Kelian (the 13th), Palisem and Coles fought many of them off, had many other adventures, made many exploration missions and otherwise had a good time. During this time, Kelian’s crush on Coles even grew, and he wanted to bond with her, in a limited way the Pemurs could. She was initially not interested, but, eventually, started to return his feelings. However, she said that she won't bond with him until all enemies are defeated. And so he went on to make sure they were. Even if it meant risking his own life. Despite the fact that Coles was annoyed by this.
But he survived all of this and, eventually, his uncle was convinced to lose his thirst for power, and all other enemies were defeated as well. Close then agreed to marry him (or what is marriage among Pemurs).
And so they did. They married and ruled together for many years. Some frowned upon this relationship, because Coles was not royalty, but others considered it irrelevant. Because it is irrelevant.
