THE ORVILLE Season Two...

When I heard that the Orville was done by the Family Guy guy, originally I didn't want to watch it. I definitely have problems with some of the jokes too. Then again he's not (anymore) writing ALL of them, plus I am able to differentiate between a show and the person. Some people seem to think that he is an awful person, and that could not be further from the truth. I think in public he often plays a role, as people kinda expect it now, but in this interview it was just him and the other guy, so no need for a facade. And that's why I like it so much.

It impresses me that he has used what clout he has attained in the industry to pursue his passion projects rather than chasing popular trends.

I made this list over at Reddit but thought you might like to discuss it too.

I remember this discussion back from my Stargate SG-1 times, how sometimes the German episode titles would change the meaning, or even give away important plot spoilers. Until recently it never occured to me to check out the Orville titles in comparison.

Here's a list, some of these are worth discussing I think.

Original title / German title / attempt of translation (my thoughts)

Old Wounds / Alte Wunden / Old Wounds (perfect)

Command Performance / Sondervorstellung / Special Performance (not sure, sounds more like a theatre term of a special performance. I miss the word command)

About a Girl / Planet der Männer / Planet of the men (a good example of how it changes the whole perception. Don't like it at all)

If the Stars should appear / Verschollen im Weltraum / Lost in space (bit overdramatic)

Pria / Pria / Pria

Krill / Krill / Krill

Majority Rule / Mehrheitsprinzip / Principle of Majority rule (good)

Into the Fold / Falte im Weltraum / Fold in space (so that's two titles with "in space". A bit unimaginative)

Cupid's Dagger / Amors Dolch / Cupid's Dagger (I love when they do literal translations. Best to stick to that)

Firestorm / Feuerstorm / Firestorm (It's really not that hard, isn't it?)

New Dimensions / Flachgelegt / To be bedded (a wordplay with the word flach / flat - do they know something about the Ed/Kelly scenes we don't? I guess these titles were made back when it was still thought of as a comedy. It does not fit the more serious tone at all)

Mad Idolatry / Gotteskult / Godworship (I guess that's a good one)

Season 2 hasn't aired yet so there are no episode titles yet

Thanks for posting this. It’s always interesting to read these foreign language titles. A few years ago I posted the Japanese titles for Star Trek TOS episodes, and some of them were hilariously bad.

So after having approximately 9 people tell me "Watch The Orville!"....I finally did. After two tries, I simply cannot watch Discovery. I don't enjoy it, I never will.

But the Orville? Holy crap do I love this show! This is Star Trek as far as I'm concerned. It's all sorts of awesome. I'm in season 2 right now. So happy there's a season 3. And I never thought I'd actually love a Seth MacFarlane show, yet here we are.

Discovery made me so depressed. The Orville makes me happy.

I think this is really the crux of it for me. I still watch Discovery and enjoy it in its own way, but it is refreshing to leave an episode of television feeling positive, like Orville can do, rather than having watched a bunch of serious Debbie Downers lamenting the end of the universe.

And the Orville isn't saddled with melo-dramatic emotions every week. There are things I like about Discovery, but watching Burnham cry every week for reasons isn't one of them.

Same here. I was initially skeptical, maybe even a bit apprehensive, but last year it was one of the best surprises. What this show has in spades is heart.

I'm up to "Lasting Impressions," and I've got to say I'm not sure I agree with the rest of the crew regarding Gordon's relationship with the holodeck woman. Maybe because it's been awhile since I've seen the TNG episode where Barclay is addicted to the holodeck, I dunno. But he brings up a good point about Isaac when they balk at him being with this simulated woman.

Isaac dated Claire despite him treating her as an experiment, having no emotions, and simulating an appearance for himself so they could have sex. Isaac is technically real, yes...but it's not such an alien concept in a future society for people to have relationships with AI...so why not Gordon with this woman? It's also different from LaForge and his holodeck recreation of that woman who designed the Enterprise-D, because she was living at the time.

I do see the crew's point. But I'm also thinking what's the harm in it? As long as it doesn't affect his performance as a crewmember (after that one time, anyway)….why not? Picard basically did this in "The Inner Light." All of those people were long dead, but he lived a life with them. This isn't too different, beyond this being Gordon's choice, whereas Picard didn't have a choice because of the probe.

Also the bit about deleting her boyfriend altering her desire to sing....Gordon could've done that himself. He could've encouraged her to pursue her singing talent over time...just like the ex boyfriend did.

Very interesting episode.

That was an interesting episode. I love that Orville gets me thinking about these types of ethical issues, like TNG used to. I feel like that's lacking in Star Trek lately.

I'm feeling the same way, and I think this is the main reason why I love this show. This is the style of Star Trek I like. The Orville gives me that familiar feeling. Discovery...no. In any case, for that reason (and many others, such as Bortus and Cliden ), I'm glad this show exists.

That isn't quite the same thing. In The Inner Light, Picard didn't know he was in a simulated environment until the end. So from his perspective for most of the episode, those were real people to him. Gordon was falling for someone he knew wasn't real.
