THE ORVILLE Season Two...

So. a show cannot provide stories that are both? You know what? Fuck it. I'm getting tired of these demands that sci-fi/fantasy movies and television should be "happy, light and non challenging". I guess geek fandom has finally lost its balls.
No. When you are living in an age where things are dark and depressing people want light and happy. That's not unrealistic and it's an absurd mischaracterization to describe it as "lost its balls." This is a thread about a show that deals with sensitive and timely topics, not the least of which is gender change at birth, terrorism, and single parenthood. Not sure what is light and fluffy about that.

As many would state there is plenty of examples of both, and we don't need dour and depressed to be realistic. There's a balance to be struck.

And I'm tired of the kind of adolescent frowniness that kids watch because it thinks it gives them balls. What I want is idea-based concepts wrapped in character-driven stories. That's Orville.

Might want to try some decaf?

I like optimistic fare (not quite sure why it can't be challenging). I also like dystopian fare. There's room on the dial for both.
Exactly. The point is that this stuff has been dystopian only for a while now and it's enough. It's time go the other way for a while. I'm sure the "grim and gritty" stuff will have it's comeback soon enough.

I do think that there are kinds of stories that Trek once did that The Orville probably can't, because Orville has this light element threaded into its very premise and tone. No "City On The Edge of Forever." Probably.

The trade-off there is that because of the humorous aspect of Orville, MacFarlane's show has not and hopefully will never fall victim to the pompous and self-important solemnity that has slowly metastasized through the Star Trek franchise on television and rendered it all but unwatchable.

You mean there will be no Section 31?! :scream:

This, exactly this.
What. Westworld has faults?
Nothing too serious.

There may be an opening at some point for MacFarlane to mock that kind of shit, at least in passing.

The Orville doesn't make fun of Star Trek on fundamental levels but it does make good gags of some of the franchise's narrative tics and cliche moves. Mercer says "open a channel to the other ship" and starts into his address only to have Alara tell him that she hasn't made the connection yet.

Nonsense like Section 31 is ripe for mockery.

It would be great if they had a guest star play a human who claimed to be Issac's sister and everyone would be like. "Hey Issac I didn't know you had a sister." To which he responds. "I didn't know I had one either."

They should have relatives crawling out of the woodwork, the way TNG did with Data.

Does Orville even need to make fun of Section 31? I mean, Disco itself is doing a pretty good job of making them a black ops agency of laughable competence. "Hey, y'all. We're Section 31, a top secret intelligence branch which doesn't officially exist. We have our own unique and recognizable insignia and everyone publicly talks about us, despite being the best kept secret in the Federation."
