THE ORVILLE, S2 E12: "SANCTUARY"

Enjoyed the episode.

Was that Dann's species in the council? The pair seemed to lacked the colorations Dann had but otherwise looked the same.

I'm starting to hope season 3 would be less Moclan-centric if we get a season 3

This is The Orville delivering the kind of social commentary that I wish TNG had more consistently delivered, though I'll concede it may have been ahead of TNG's time. Yeah, I don't think anyone's entirely happy with how it ends, but that's the nature of compromise (Washington should take note). I could still see the Union fracturing farther down the line if we get enough seasons.

I like that the episode threw us a couple of red herrings in terms of what the Moclans were up to at the beginning, before suddenly upping the stakes for the Union.

The song playing over the battle seemed a bit goofy and trite, but...oh well.

My only disappointment is that there's no discussion between Bortus and Klyden at the end of the episode, though I found it slightly hopeful that Klyden actually seemed abashed by Bortus's outburst in front of Kelly.

I can see this being the end of the Moclan "arc" for the time-being, but I'd like a better idea of where Bortus and Klyden are at after Bortus attacked his own kinsmen.

And I too saw some of Dann's kinsmen in the council chambers. :)

This was an amazing episode, and one where I felt most of the humor hit for the most part, and at the same time being a very thoughtful and original episode. I have to say, this season has really upped its game. It has been pretty consistently good.

And can I say the scene with Victor Garber, Ted Danson and Seth McFarlane was amazing in its own right? Yowza, all that talent in one room! :D

Who thought Dolly Parton would sound so good. At first I kind of cringed at that scene in the shuttle, and then the firefight started and it all made sense.

Great episode tonight. Dolly Parton would be proud that she was used to spawn a female revolution. :D

Great episode. Nice to see worldbuilding around the Planetary Union. Moclans are starting to become more Klingon like. Great performances. I really hope the show gets a third season.

At the start of this episode I didn't really care for it because I'm tired of the Moclan episodes. I got interested in the episode once they found the Moclan woman and I liked the scene in the shuttle with Ed and the Moclan woman. I never thought I'd hear Dolly Parton on a series set 100s of years from now. i liked it's use in the fight scene.

Klyden is an ass. Maybe if he wasn't so mean and humorless he might be more tolerable. I just don't see how he and Bortus can remain together. Klyden is too much of a sour puss. It's hard to see what Bortus sees in the guy. But it looks like Bortus is wondering what he sees in him too.

Very good episode.
A lot of Trek connections:
Frakes (who did great as director) and Sirtis of course.
A few days ago I posted that I was surprised Joe Menosky didn't have a writing credit this season. Well he wrote this one and it was a good script even with the weird Dolly Parton part (which I suspect was added by Macfarlane).
Which one was Tony Todd? I believe he played the Moclan ambassador.

Did they show any of the Elephant man people in the council?

Tony Todd! Tony Todd! Tony Todd! Warmed my heart to see the man pretty much solely responsible for my favorite TV episode ever (DS9's 'The Visitor') make a cameo. The episode itself I found fantastic. Wonderful, intelligent social commentary and genuine tension.

PLEASE GOD RENEW THE ORVILLE.

I don't know about others, but I can't stand Klyden. The reasons are different of course, but he's like the Wesley Crusher/Kai Winn on this show. Just a character I can't stand.

As for the episode, terrific social commentary--done in a way that doesn't insult half a country, no matter which half you happen to be in. Thought provoking, but not over the top. I also like how they acknowledge that judging other cultures by your standards also is problematic. Yes, their treatment of women is horrific, but that's by our standards. Then again, if a culture goes against your ideals, even if they have the right to do so, how do you maintain an alliance with them? If humanity in this universe is so evolved, once the threat is gone, and once they no longer need the weapons, how can this alliance truly stand?

I liked the episode, but I kinda hated the ending.

They were setting up the episode as a no-win solution for The Union. Either they side with the Moclan homeworld for reasons of realpolitik, and completely jettison morality, or they stand for righteousness and The Union is sundered. They found some wishy-washy middle ground and the status quo was largely retained. Even the fight on the female colony planet was low stakes, with everyone seemingly stunned or knocked out.

Really the only lasting result here was character growth for Bortus, and the continued souring of his marriage with Klyven.

It was a cute episode.
The Dolly Parton song was the best part.
The scenes inside the nebula were very good too and the space battle also.
The Federation trying to , sorry Union, trying to tell other planets how to behave, yawn.
But overall, still a cute episode.

This world could do with quite a bit more of that right now, IMO.

In general, I agree. But this is the classic - and stupid - Trek trope of setting up a high-stakes no-win situation and then completely whiffing it. I prefer shows that play for keeps.

Hey, don't forget Kelly Hu! :adore:

I liked the episode. It brings up the sort of principle vs practical question and questions of how you can be allies with people with such radically different values, and came to a conclusion that didn’t cop out the conflict.
