I thought the story was very cleverly structured. Whether you like his subject matter or not, at this point McFarlane is a technically first-rate television writer.

The problem is that it's a fucking holodeck episode! Although, I did admit that it was better than the average holodeck episode. I know, damning with feint praise.

Overall, I've enjoyed the writing on The Orville greatly.

I'd love to see him get a shot at writing Star Trek 4.

Speaking of writing, Mercer's line about not being a good writer was a clever self-deprecating joke since Seth actually is a great writer in real life.

"The Big Goodbye."

Torme was a great writer for the show, and he got first crack at the holodeck - essentially invented the "holodeck story" as distinct from using it as a simple plot device.

BTW, TNG occasionally got pitched by writers who would propose some extravagant location while suggesting that it wouldn't be too complicated or expensive because "it's on the holodeck." :guffaw:

Since this episode wasn't actually written by MacFarlane, I interpreted the line as one of the writing staff making a good-natured jab at the boss.
So which is first? Can't be the VOY Irish ones, got to be TNG. Ship in a Bottle? The Big Goodbye?
You know, I kind of have a soft spot for DS9's episode with Dr. Bashir's James Bond program.

In my opinion the wind was taken out of the drama sails a good deal by finding out early it was a holodeck simulation. If we had found out after the ship blew, that would have been much better.

I merely thought this one was "Okay" I was slightly disappointed by the ending of the ep. We already had an Alara episode this season, I knew from the cargo bay on that this was some sort of "Alara wasn't on the ship the whole time" deal, (of course, she was in the Holo chamber or whatever their equivalent is, so technically, she was on board but you know what I mean.) I felt like this ep. would have been better as an ensemble straight "haunted ship" story, basically a lighter/funnier Event Horizon where everyone was affected by something at the end of the ep. But hey, at least Nurse Park didn't get killed for real. I gave this one a straight C. I will add however, that I thought the shots of the Orville flying through the Plasma Storm looked great.

I loved and hated this episode.

Loved:
The camaraderie between the crew
The effects of the plasma storm
The atmosphere throughout the episode. This felt like a Halloween story.
Robert Picardo is Alara's dad!
Kind of a mix between "Where No One Has Gone Before" and "Remember Me" from a TNG perspective. Loved it.
"There was an alligator in the cargo bay. I crushed it with a chair."
I have to admit, crazy Doc Finn is also crazy hot. Yeah, I'm in to that. Surprise.
"Hillbillies of the galaxy." I actually nodded and replied "he's not wrong," when Alara's father said it.
"Cause hobo clowns are hungry." I busted out laughing.

Hated:
Clowns
Oh god, spiders.
Oh GOD SPIDERS!
FUCKING SPIDERS ON EVERYWHERE!

Seriously, this was a terrific episode. I rated it excellent, and would watch it again except for the spiders, gods help me, the spiders.

I was wondering if anyone else would have an issue with the spiders. The clown didn't bother me, but yeah, not a fan of the spiders.

I've held a tarantula once (outward bound course years ago) but having multiple ones everywhere (or spiders bigger than I am) - yeah, no, just no, god no:(
;)

I squint watched that part of the episode.

Poor World Clown Association. They complained and had to deal with the new "IT" and now shortly after that, this.

Yeah, but I guess we could argue it was half an Alara episode since it also focused on Ed and Kelly and the relationship viability as a couple. This episode was solely focused on Alara and dealt with some deeper character aspects with her other than her inexperience with command.

That is a fair point I suppose, but still you have characters like Malloy who haven't even gotten to be the center of an Ep. or the "main" part of a dual character ep. (like the Dr. Finn/Issac episode) Yeah, I know we still have two Eps. Left, but aren't those going to be a two parter? I could have sworn I read that somewhere, but I can't find anything.
