Yes. You can argue that he's funny or that he's charming, but he's proven time after time to be a complete idiot. In fact, you can see the Doctor and Amy constantly giving him shit due to this fact. As for his "awesomeness" being exaggerated, I see it as the same thing that happened to Boba Fett; he had VERY little screentime but became a legend because people thought it was cool to make stuff up. Same thing also happened with the captain of Kirk's dad in Star Trek 11. People said he rocked, but look how fast he died to Nero...
I think you're taking it way too seriously. It's like Chuck Norris facts or the Old Spice Guy. And no, he's not dull and useless. He's one of the main character's love interests. He's the one who guarded the Pandorica for two thousand years.

You know, I can live with season arcs. But I could also happily go the rest of my life without seeing another goddamn 'The Doctor saves/destroys/creates the universe' story.

She's probably just scamming somebody who knows the boss is a woman with an eyepatch but otherwise doesn't know what Kovarian looks like.
True. here is a wild but Moffet like thought, could Kovarian be an older regenration of River? Yeah, i know 'River' as we know her died in the library but what is she got out of the computer somehow and was really mad at the Doctor. The woman we see could be either a regeneration of river or river manifested a body someway. Kovarian's motivation seem personal and she is very smart.
Hmm...It's a long way from what we know now to River kidnapping her pregnant mother and replacing her with a Ganger, then kidnapping her infant self and replacing with a Ganger, and all the bloodshed in AGMGTW. And let's not forget, clues currently lead to little Melody ending up a slave of the Silence
True. Who knows other than Moff. Scamming sounds like River so that makes perfect sense. The only other rational explanation is that this 'River with a patch' is some elaborate trick either using the flesh or another medium to seriously head fuck The Doctor.
