The new DS9 station-Anyone draw it yet? (SPOILER ALERT)

Before I post this, I should mention that I am by no means an artist. However, I did grab a pencil and paper and sketched out quickly what was in my mind after I read the book. I don't have a scanner nearby, so the best I could do was take picture with my phone. These are just my initial thoughts about the station, try not to focus on the fact that my drawing is awful!

Also, I should say that I was quite delighted that the USS Rio Grande actually outlived Deep Space Nine herself!

Well, try not to laugh too hard, but here it is: http://i.imgur.com/GYwUs.jpg

I like it! Not bad at all. :) (Certainly better than I could do.)

However,
it does still show the Wormhole, which is anachronistic in any drawing of the new DS9 (so far as we know) ;)

Not bad, but I think the book said that the three rings were all mutually perpendicular, so that inner ring should be rotated 90 degrees clockwise (or counterclockwise). And there should probably be more crossover bridges between rings.

I've had trouble envisioning what DRGIII meant when he said that the 3 rings were all mutually perpendicular, and I admit that I'm still flummoxed by it here.

I agree about the crossover bridges, though.

I think that there should be a ring in the horizontal plane, one in the vertical, and ANOTHER vertical ring but rotated 90 degrees to the first. Could be wrong though...

Oh, okay, I think I get it... it's like if you take a blow-up-globe-balloon (like this), construct rings that are parallel to the Equator, Prime Meridian/180th Meridian great circle and the 90th Meridian great circle, pop the balloon, shrink both the Meridian rings, then shrink the Prime Meridian some more, and then install crossover bridges.

...

That's a horrible explanation, but I think I get it now. :p :)

I like it!!! Good work man, sort of what I imagened.

Just as you have 3 axes in 3-dimensional space, x, y, and z, so you can have three "wheels" that rotate around those axes. Each one is perpendicular to both of the others.

Thanks; that's what I was trying to describe with my globe analogy. :p Your image is much more helpful, though. :)

Now that makes sense!!!

Ah, okay, I get it now. I also have to admit to being confused by that initial description. That would lend a better sense of symmetry to the station. In my picture, if you looked at the station from the side, it would look like a cross, and any other angle between side-on and front-on would look unbalanced to my eye.

I wonder if it would constitute fair use to quote the description of the new station design here, perhaps with parts blanked to avoid story spoilers. Because I'd love to read it, but I don't want to open the novel so I don't get spoiled on plot specifics ...

Does this mean we'll be getting and Enterprise-F and a Voyager-A sometime soon as well?
Voyager underwent a major refit in Full Circle, although the book covers continue to depict the original design of the ship.

Then again, if it looks anything like Star Trek Online's successor to the Intrepid-class, it's probably for the best...

MY EYES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It burns!!!!!!!!!!

I rather like that !

I'd just like to thank the ignorant OP for the spoiler in the thread title. You're a real champ.

^^ Cool. I like the ball at the center. The old DS9 felt an awful lot like a skeleton, so it's nice to see some "muscle" on the new design.

That said, I think there are supposed to be three rings (like in Christopher's gyroscope on the last page), not two. EDIT: I got a five on the AB Calculus AP exam. You'd think I could count to three. My bad. (I had been expecting one of the vertical rings to be smaller than the other two, if you're curious what was going through my head.)
