The new captain.

This business of The Leader being a paragon of judgment and probity that everyone looks respectfully up to at all times - Picard, in other words - is dull as dishwater.

Totally agree. That's why I really liked Pulaski — she challenged Picard. He really needed a character who'd stand up to him, force him to look at problems from another perspective. It should've been Riker from the beginning.

Awesome. This is golden. I assume the bridge will constantly have a fog of smoke hanging over everything?

Yes. And for reasons that will never be explained, actual Christmas lights.

Oh I bet the guys who hated the lens flares in ST 2009 will *love* that. Damn, the mood though. Sinatra playing constantly?

I've often wondered what Starfleet's drug and alcohol policy is

Sinatra will be on a constant loop. The security chief will be played by Big P*ssy from The Sopranos. His name will actually be "Galoot." Visiting alien dignitaries will comment that he looks like a night club bouncer. He will burn them with his cigar when they violate the prime directive: a three drink minimum.

I want Katee Sackhoff as an Andorian Captain!

Katee!

It would be great to see Jamie Bamber again. This time he can keep his British accent. :)

Heh...how about Hugh Laurie for something. He can be the counselor but keep his House persona...

Oh wait.....:D

Yeah, but what's missing there is - Picard was usually right; he was at least a character who possessed enormous moral and intellectual gravity in any disagreement. It had to be "I respectfully disagree, but you are the Captain." You couldn't approach him with "I understand this and you don't so here's why we can't do it your way at all."

Jack O'Neill was just the guy whose job was to be in charge. Lots of times he had to be turned around a little because his people were smarter or in some other way ahead of him.

Some of the people he led got on his nerves, a lot. He got on theirs. Some he was partial to, and that would affect his decisions too.

There are a lot of people like that in fiction and in real life - okay, in real life, maybe all of them. Because I've got the job of leading doesn't mean I know better than everyone else. Maybe I'm good at it and maybe I'm not, maybe I have the experience to see what others don't sometimes, but at the end of the day I'm just a limited individual like the people who report to me. Sometimes I'm just wrong.

I guess I'm saying it's past time that Star Trek rethought the entire Trek myth of leadership in favor of something more human.

The Kirk/Spock dynamic was closer to this than Picard/Riker. Spock would freely question, disagree, argue and at times force Kirk to reconsider. Col. O'Neil was more of a "team leader" than a captain; he would be ill-suited in that persona for a large command. It was a major character shift when he was promoted to General, and that season (7 or 8 i think) was one of stargate's weakest.

And Jennifer Lien as the recurring villain. (Too soon?)

Too soon!!! How about never. Depending on the outcome of the proceedings in January, she might not even be around in another year or two.

People under his command ought to compete and challenge him to try to get what they want out of situations. This business of The Leader being a paragon of judgment and probity that everyone looks respectfully up to at all times - Picard, in other words - is dull as dishwater.

Michael Shanks might fit that conception or has he disappeared?

On the other end of the gravitas continuum,I'd really like to see Javier Bardem. I know not happening, but it's only going to be around 13 episodes a season. Well, I hope it will be a significant surprise, whoever gets the brass ring.

Peter Dinklage would be awesome. Great suggestion. I also could see Nathan Fillion, Tricia Helfer, Lena Heady, Lance Reddick, Andre Braugher, or Anna Torv as captain.

Yeah. Riker was actually hired because of his ability to challenge the Captain (the business on the Hood where he wouldn't let his Captain beam into an unsafe situation).

But then again, the issue with challenging Picard is the fact that every other command decision is made by consensus. He's always asking for options or holding meetings where he seeks out the next course of action. It's hard to challenge someone when they gave you multiple venues to make a decision for them.

Somebody who used to be famous enough that they'll add star power to the show but currently needs a paycheck badly enough to put on a spacesuit.

New Captain? I hope it's someone who can look good posing as a badass for promotional photos and video clips without having any real intelligence or personality.

I just hope they don't stop at the captain when picking the talent. With Enterprise, it was like, "Here's Scott Bakula, and a bunch of people you don't know!" Some shows get lucky with having nobodies cast, but I hope they don't take such a risk.

I like Dennis' suggestions about how a captain shouldn't know everything. Couldn't help but think of my boss there.....

Not necessarily as captain, and I've said it elsewhere, but I want Tom Mison on the show.

He's my current tv actor man-crush.

Man-crushable, but I really don't want an American or Brit in the lead. I'd love for them to find a really great foreign actor and bring them to the States - like Tarantino did with Waltz. Their foreign flavor alone would be something new and interesting to experience, unlike when they cast an American/Brit of ethnic ancestry that really is just an American/Brit.
