Game The Most Disliked Second Season Episode

Saving "The Outrageous Okona", because someone here keeps threatening to save it only to choose another episode. :)

Joking aside, I actually like Data's exploration of humor.

But it's true that I like to put the gag in "running gag"!!

:guffaw::guffaw::guffaw::guffaw::guffaw::guffaw::guffaw::guffaw::guffaw::guffaw::guffaw::guffaw::guffaw::guffaw::guffaw:

Data's exploration of humor was not a bad notion to base a subplot/Plot-B on. My problem with it is that Spiner and Goldberg, as a double-act, ended up being funnier than the comic hired - if unintentionally. (It's been claimed Jerry Lewis was offered the role and he was unavailable, which explains why Joe Piscopo attempted to emulate his style.)

William Campbell shows a hairstyle that's easy to manage, something anyone can do, and how no actor auditioning for Riker could pull off that dialogue.

Can't deny the music is cool... good direction too, especially in the placement of actors when Okona beams aboard. Not to mention, Riker's facial expression at time index 2:08 says it all. And he's show it to Data! And even Data would be able to figure it out! Best of all, Okona's question to Data about computers at the end was pretty good...

If Okona had the outrageousness and more consistent suave debonair, and I cannot tell if it's the acting or dialogue that's clobbering the scene, the episode might have been better... but it's a mixed bag. Every time I try to rewatch this one, I eventually return to "Time Squared" afterward... including the very special episode where they did a crossover with "Sliders":

Now that I've looked it up and remembered, Saru had a lot of great material in season two. I'll save The Sound of Thunder, where there is a great debate over whether Saru should expose the truth about the Kelpian transformation.

There is no worst? Did you somehow not see "Second Contact"?
- Funnily enough, I rewatched it just the other day (going through LDS again in preparation for season 3), and still found parts of it funny (Boimler being sucked by the spidercow, Rutherford's & Barnes' date amidst the virus taking over the ship), but it's down there with "Temporal Edict" and "Moist Vessel" as the least best ;)

If Okona had the outrageousness and more consistent suave debonair, and I cannot tell if it's the acting or dialogue that's clobbering the scene, the episode might have been better
- Billy Campbell/Okona needn't say a word. Ahhhhh..... :adore: :luvlove:

I'm struggling a bit now, but Zoumas in ENT: "Canamar" was amusing enough - and with a great look/make-up - for me to save it. Plus, I recall the linked ships descent into the atmosphere being very well done.

There's some that's outrageous about my next pick:

TOS: "The Deadly Years"

Granted, I can't stand Commodore Dingbat in this one, and the basic idea of rapid aging is fixed all too quickly (but one has to roll with it), but it's easy to see - for both bad and good reasons - why TNG would try to use the same trope and in a better way with "Unnatural Selection", another underrated episode I have rewatched because, aging stuff aside, it's also a strong episode for Pulaski and fleshing out some character details. The same episode also introduced the use of the transporter to fix the plot problem with - and while done thoughtfully in this one, later episodes would scribble it in inanely as a "get out of dilemma free" moment, or on the flip side they would conjure up a means to make the technology fail to create a problem... but only enough to allow this "problem of the week - Brady Bunch style" to be resolved harmlessly, instead of doing anything genuinely dangerous or epic or catastrophic -- for more, see "Star Trek: The Motion Picture".

Back to TDY - it is cool how Chekov doesn't age, due to adrenaline surge (apparently), hence all the tests and subsequent jibes put out by Chekov.

It might have been nice if they had Scotty do the old "fear of dying" trope as well as guest-star lady who inevitably dies (yet is wearing blue, but that's okay since she's not in the Security division where they all wear red to ensure easy kills by their enemy, but remember that color television was new back then and red is SEXXXXXXY!!!!).

It's not one I regularly revisit, since this one lacks any real exploration, and lacks even more in terms of a sense of urgency despite the big plot point of "Hey look, space is dangerous and they've got maybe a week left or whatever the plot needs it to be, plus two" - even the little devil-controlled culty kids in "And The Children Shall Lead" episode, implanting images in their victims minds of rapid aging and so on, had far more palpable feel than this episode ever could.

They also ignore how men do indeed feel "vanity" and wanting to look attractive as well. But it's the 1960s and the censors of the time probably would not allow that aspect to be explored, what with all the other limitations imposed and how many rules they were already bending.

I'm more into Norman myself, but Okona really did have a decent hairstyle -- and would be deemed by some as "outrageous", but this was the late-80s... what hairstyle wasn't?

:guffaw:

I loved TAS a lot more than I thought I would when I finally watched the whole series, as opposed to only half-watching it under glaring eyes. I think TAS was easily better than a lot of season 3 of TOS, so it's easy to think of it as seasons 4 and 5 now.

Anyway, I'll save The Practical Joker, as it was so very funny throughout.

"Marauders" - this episode grew on me a lot on rewatching. I like that they realise they can't beat the marauders with strength because they'll just come back later, they have to out-think them.

The following episode has some outrageous stuff in it:

TOS: "Wolf In The Fold"

The casual sexism in this episode stinks more than a hotel full of paranoid skunks. Granted, this is based in part by taking the lore of "Jack the Ripper" and expanding on it, complete with the outdated social mores from the time in which Jack lived (1800s).

There's also a psycho-tricorder, which is never seen again in TOS or any of its spinoffs.

Nitpicks aside, John Fielder nails it as the possessed alien, Spock makes one heck of a quip, and the computer even learns how to count to Pi.

Since the entity "lived" in the Enteprise's computer, why it didn't seek out Lore before the Borg had after it got dispersed... now there's a sequel...

Despite the Red Angel arc being a total mess, Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2 was a big, tense way to end the season. It was a very brave move by the producers to move the show forward 900 years.
