Game The Most Disliked Second Season Episode

I've removed Paradise from the list. ;)

The Alternate is next for me. I just love Mora Pol when he pops up, as it's always interesting seeing just how Odo acts around him, being as he thought Mora was being too hard on him when he was first discovered.

James Sloyan is always good in every role. Trust me.

There's nothing outrageous about this one:

TNG: "The Schizoid Man"

It's the old "put a soul into a machine" trope again that Trek often turned to, with mixed results, but this one has a weird charm that's indescribable.

Kudos to Spiner, who's a natural, with the nuanced performance of Ira Flatow Graves now inside his brain. Add in Suzie Plakson as Dr Selar and it's a shame we didn't see her more often...

There's nothing outrageous about this one:

TOS: "I, Mudd"

Loved as a kid, not as much as an adult, but still not unlikeable.

Roger C Carmel still excels as Mudd, using extragalactic beings who came over from Andromeda, likely out of boredom because they are incessant on wanting to please everyone - something Chekov was reeeeeeeeeeeally interested in and quite literally*.

Stella's subplot (subroutine? :P) is based on cliche 1950s stereotype jokes, and yet Kay Elliott delivers it so well. Not merely a stereotype joke, it's used cleverly to make Mudd out to the baddie, because he is -- I'm not going to complain. And not because my ex was an alc-- but that's not important right now...

I love how TOS spares no expense in 1960s transparent shower curtains tailored into women's clothing, but to make up for it they use off-the-shelf $1.86 sweatpants** for all the male ones, and based on their looks they kept ordering one size too small (as if it saved on the budget whatsoever, but - again - I'm not complaining...). On the plus side, the cost in the costuming allowed the nifty little light-up necklaces, which are somewhat impressive given the technology of the time.

Since computing was new to general audiences, these androids with-central-Locutus-locus have no subsystem or task monitor that handles errant processes and halts them, to prevent the very sort of logic loop that would disable a computer (and without any entertaining puffs of billowy smoke). Mainframes of the time were, since numerous dumb terminals were attached and each was running its own set of nifty tasks and all...

I like how the episode camps it up, but then after the perfect commercial break, the crew even state that it's been all fun:

KIRK: So far this thing has had its amusing aspects, but that threat the androids made about taking over all the humans in the galaxy is not very funny.

The only thing missing is if he turned to the camera to actually say it***.

The old standby plot point of "let's chuck a brain/soul/whatever into a mechanical body" is used, but better than in the season 1 escapade where a nekkid Kirk is on an oversized turntable that would probably be used later in an episode of Batman 66.

The color palette used for lighting the sets was really craftily done, typical of the era, especially as there are so many colors and yet it doesn't feel as "busy" as it otherwise might.

* So it's either "eww", and/or "guess who might have done a script rewrite to add this scene in?"

** Yup, I really looked it up, but the prices might be off by a few cents, depending on inflation between 1967 and 1960 - I'm not that pedantic... 9 times out of 10...

*** Am so glad he hadn't...

A very tough round. I'm taking out The Changeling (TOS). Truly one of my favourite episodes of all time. I love Nomad!

"90 photon torpedoes" was stretching it, as were a couple individual scenes, but as a whole and combined with the execution of "Changeling", it's still pretty solid. Indeed, it was a partial but significant basis for 1979's "The Motion Picture" so there are some neat ideas in this one. Depending on mood it's easy to return to.

It's also the one most noteworthy in terms of how Kirk nags it to death:

^^awesome :luvlove:

Best of all: Nomad even came back in an episode in TNG, albeit in the third parallel world from just around the corner, after Nomad turned Wes into a pile of sand and starting to float up and down over him as a sort of victory dance:

There's nothing outrageous about this one:
Are you planning on choosing an outrageous one at some point?

Investigations leaves the list. While Neelix can be obnoxious at times, this episode concluded one of Voyager's sadly rare multi-episode story arcs. And, even though it was faked, Tom's departure was actually pretty well handled, and there was a pretty good fight scene at the end.

There's nothing outrageous about this one:

TNG: "Up The Long Ladder"
The Irish stereotyping is a bit much, and the question is begged as to how does one sell a less-advanced civilization without stumbling into or at least risking inadvertent cliche stereotyping, but the idea of a colony that splintered into two, with one becoming highly advanced* and the other stagnating*, and having to unify for the survival of their entire species is largely good.

Hardy, Fake Stereotype there has a point:

Also note the octagonal barrels - they were first used in 1983's "V", but with the Visitor insignia removed and bumper stickers put in their place to conceal it. Bit of a shame, since crossovers are cool...

Especially in a follow-up scene with Misses Stereotype:

Wow, I just remembered Stella Mudd for some reason.

And, oh my, Riker - you scamp, you!! Yes, the best sci-fi always resorts to long padded-out scenes, especially when it's time for RIker to show off his big amenity...

But the surprise is nice, with the reveal of the other colony.

For all the quibbles, this is closer to hard sci-fi that wasn't often seen later in the show's run

Cloning is definitely a sheepish topic... it's also sad that Geordi's VISOR's lie detector ability was ditched later on.

Interesting points raised... and, wow, Pulaski is the evil version of Troi (and would be even more so had she the same psi ability...)

And, of course, from the other alternate-alternate universe's parallel dimension (and its fraternal sibling) where they did do a crossover:

* so let's be glad that Kirk didn't show up as both of these societies seem to be stagnating in their own ways

Saving TOS The Gamesters of Triskelion, since one of few episodes where Uhura had some lines (RIP Nichelle Nichols)

wut?! :wah: I met her in 1991 at a convention prior to ST6's release - absolutely sweet person...

Triskeleon was a bit of a mixed bag, but having other than "THE BIG THREE" led to some potential, though - as often in TOS (but thankfully rectified somewhat in TAS) - Uhura is still short-shafted. (Which reminds, in "Who Mourns for Adonis", Spock points out that Uhura is pretty much the only person who can accomplish the tasks at hand (which she does) - TOS sadly didn't get to put in too much fore characters beyond the big three, but usually the moments that did were poignant.

The episode also coined McCoy's censor-ducking line of "Are you out of your Vulcan mind?"

"Children of Earth" tells a poignant tale, and gets about a bazillion points for style.

I'll save "Monsters."
I liked the journey into Picard's mind.

I wish there was another TOS with good Uhura material to save. RIP Nichelle! A true icon. Good material for Uhura is all I'm hoping for whenever I watch any TOS episode, and not bringing her back for a 90's guest spot remains one of Berman Trek's most obnoxious missteps. This is one reason I struggle to connect to TOS -- Uhura was truly my favorite character, and all I'm ever hoping for is for her to get a real role.
