I really like ENT: "Fight Or Flight" for showing us how dangerous space can be, and how the crew are still getting to grips with their mission/situation and each other. Hoshi, Phlox and T'Pol were clear stand-out characters for me when I first watched the show many years ago, which this episode cemented. (Hoshi gets a point deducted for abducting Sluggo, though)

I love Joe Menosky scripts, and here is another one that has his trademark mythology within it.

This episode is one of the few in the franchise that is great because it is precisely where it should be in production and airdate order to make it most effective.

It's still early enough in the series that some cracks in trust in the command staff can happen, but not so late that when it does occur it's unbelievable. (I'm looking squarely at you Janeway and Chakotay in season 6, "THE VOYAGER CONSPIRACY".)

So many still I could choose. I think I'll go "Battle At The Binary Stars." Deeply flawed, but damn did it also blow my mind as Star Trek's return to TV. (am I about to rewatch Discovery again? It's the messiest show I can't stop rewatching!)

Just think, Burnham has saved the entire universe five times since receiving her life sentence in this episode! Lucky thing for all sentient life in the universe that her sentence got commuted.

Aside, but I still can. not. believe. that backstory did not come up, even indirectly, in "The Examples", an entire episode about the rights of prisoners.

Other than moving "The Voyager Conspiracy" to very early in the show, I'm not sure how it can be believable. Even if near the start of the episode Janeway and Chakotay take a shuttle to go study the nebula Chakotay mentioned so that Seven gives her conspiracy theories about them to other people, it still relies on Harry and B'Elanna not trusting each other and they mostly have since "Caretaker".

"Emanations" - I love this episode. There's a lot of dramatic tension about whether Harry will get back in time (I think this may be the only episode where Janeway seemed to seriously consider leaving someone behind) and some interesting mythology. It's disturbing that the aliens of the week totally right off anyone who is even slightly disabled.

Nope. Not the TNG sequel that, save for two or three scenes, is a shallow installment unworthy of Trek. I'm talkin' about the original generation.

It's somewhat early on in the series run, but still knows how to take what is known of characters and expand on them.

Sulu the fencer, Riley the "horny crooner with some dignity", the performance art painter scribbling very frightening messages out of partial sarcasm. This episode excels, whereas its remake 20 years later did not. Thankfully, later TNG entries would take plot points from older stories and then redo them with more deftness, and even making them their iconic own due to the new life accorded. But that's another story or few...

"Sorry, neither!" :devil:

"Take D'Artagnan here to sickbay!!" seems uncharacteristic of Spock, since he is infected only later in the story by Chapel grasping his big hand and later fingering his face. Shh, don't mention plot holes existed in TOS... Also, a tangent: Behind the scenes, Majel must have kept a stiff upper lip as she went from Number One to pining over someone unreachable... TAS gave Chapel more to do, thankfully, but TNG really went to town with this via Lwaxana and giving her a stronger personality, but that's another story - or a few good ones...

Oh, my dear Scotty, Trek screws up physics all the time. But at least TOS made an effort at some constraints. And shh, don't mention that scientific inaccuracy didn't always exist back then, either, it's knowing how to use what is known effectively while making the unknown feel credible. I won't get started on VOY, either... But I blabble, back to the story:

Good teaser. Nutter who thinks a paintbrush is the funniest thing since "Laugh-In" and/or the big ostrich feather collection used during those special moments that Kodak doesn't want you to take pictures of, takes a suitably sinister and creepy turn later on when he starts scribbling "Sinner repent", with a horrific typeface and in that same iconic shade of red, all over the place... early TOS and its implication-driven and psychological/Twilight Zone-style horror was used to good effect at times...

A shame this story was split from being a two-parter with the time travel episode, with the latter half used later in the season. That would have made the whole of the piece that much stronger.

"Two Days And Two Nights" - it's fun, easy viewing. Over the season Hoshi has gone from being terrified about being an astronaut to feeling confident about going on holiday on an alien planet and just enjoying the opportunity to learn new languages. Going from not having the universal translator to Hoshi inventing it is something that I think Ent did really well.

Time for Voyager and I'm eliminating Heroes and Demons. The Doctor plus Beowulf. Come on. Only Star Trek could do a story like that. Voyager season 1 clearly has it's fans (albeit it's a shorter season) with only two episodes left in the game. I could have easily gone for Learning Curve instead.

No review could begin to top that one, which also explains the downfall of what could have been a really good story and the potential is there... then again, the very idea that later seasons would dare look at one of the worst made the year before and build up something of substance took real guts -- and largely pays off. And does it so well that they keep returning to it several times... but not in the horrid way that sets the eyeballs rolling. Those pedestal-placed episodes owe far more to this 43 minutes of indulgent, lost-potential, and mostly-inebriated garbage than one consciously would take credit for. And while that's far scarier, it's actually enough of a reason to save it from the most hated episode of dooooooooooooooooom!

Same. I've revisited a lot of rarely revisited Star Trek because of these games. I don't always play due to time, but they are great fun as are those that play.

Right. I'm not sure... but I think the next show chronologically from VOY is LDS?

In that case there's only Second Contact left. It wouldn't have been my first choice, but as the others have been picked away in some kind of LDS feeding frenzy it is the only choice. It's a messy, often too frenetic introduction to a show that would go on to be so much more than the sum of it's parts, but it's certainly not a bad episode. I don't regret the choice.
