LD: Envoys Because not only is the A-Plot fun, but the B-Plot with Rutherford trying out all the other starfleet career tracks is absolute gold! It also undoes my least favourite part of the LD pilot (the callousness of the senior stuff) by showing them their caring and (over-)enthusiastic sides. Like when Rutherford accidentality ejects all the ship's children into space in that training exercise, Ransom is still game to try it again "On a bigger ship! With even more children on board!"
And it was the episode that gave Rutherford the nickname "Baby Bear"

The Cloud because I'm a sucker for cool aliens, and the alien was pretty cool. Also, I like this episode because it showcased the crew trying to stick to their Federation principles - they unknowingly and unintentionally hurt the alien life form, and they need to fix it, even if it puts them in danger.

Okay, the time has come to save an episode that I have defended more than any other in the franchise... "MOVE ALONG HOME".

There are many reasons why this is a GOOD episode. Allow me to illustrate...

Allamaraine, here are four!

1. This is where Quark truly begins his growth as a character. His pleading to Falow signaled he was more than just a greedy Ferengi. This is the first step in a series long character arc.

2. A brilliant concept. How many of us have wanted to be inside a game, whether it's a board or video one?

3. We get a rare visit from a Gamma Quadrant race. The Wadi are another example of how that Quadrant emphasizes highly advanced technology. And while the appearance of the Wadi is generic, their costumes are bright and unforgettable.

4. We see our heroes use nothing but their ingenuity and wits. No technobabble solution... just puzzle solving. It's rare to see that in the franchise.

5. No one was actually in ANY danger. This is a feature, not a bug. Especially when a VAST number of episodes have life and death or high stakes, particularly in the current era of live action.

6. It's a catchy tune. It's fun!

Armus is brilliant as a non-humanoid life form, even if it uses a humanoid shape. Used perfectly in LD too... But he's creepy as all heck, though I wish the story could have tortured Riker before killing Yar. We know one would die, but keeping the guessing going - even back then, showing 2 main characters being murdered would never happen. Keeping the sense of threat going as to which one and in season 1 it could have been any of them...

I think season 1 is quite variable, probably because they were trying out different ideas - there are quite a few episodes that I love and a few that I'm not worried about re-watching.

"Symbiosis" - I love that Picard approached the problem in a totally different way than Kirk would have.

Majel was good at the computer but Lwaxana grew a lot on me and she's often a riot.

The backstory was incredibly tragic; from what I recall it involved a species having a plague and everyone else they met trying to kill them all. That was glossed over in favor of "starcrossed lovers meets arranged marriages", and if this had been DS9 it'd be the other way around, focusing more on the backstory of the Tarellians - which is pretty gritty when all is said and done, but don'tr ask why Security Class would teach one comparatively esoteric issue (though it begs some interesting fathomings):

TASHA: We learned the rest of the story in security training. Some Tarellians made it to other worlds only to die along with the populations they infected.
LAFORGE: It's pretty well covered in Academy training now, Captain. Many of them tried to avoid other civilised worlds as they escaped only to be hunted down and destroyed anyway.
PICARD: And it was believed that the last Tarellian vessel was destroyed eight years ago by the Alcyones.
LAFORGE: Yes, sir.
PICARD: Exactly when will they reach Haven?
DATA: Exactly thirteen hours, nine minutes, twenty two seconds, three hundred fift--
PICARD: Thank you. Which creates a very difficult problem for the Enterprise. Our treaty requires us to protect Haven, and Federation policy requires that we assist life forms in need, which must include the Tarellians.

Sheesh, usually Picard curtly barks with readily-shrouded glee "Prime directive - let the whole planet die because the directive is not for the least of which is supposed to protect us" or whatever "Pen Pals" and other episodes needed him to say on cue, so this one-liner of his is rather a nice change...

1. This is where Quark truly begins his growth as a character. His pleading to Falow signaled he was more than just a greedy Ferengi. This is the first step in a series long character arc.

2. A brilliant concept. How many of us have wanted to be inside a game, whether it's a board or video one?

3. We get a rare visit from a Gamma Quadrant race. The Wadi are another example of how that Quadrant emphasizes highly advanced technology. And while the appearance of the Wadi is generic, their costumes are bright and unforgettable.

4. We see our heroes use nothing but their ingenuity and wits. No technobabble solution... just puzzle solving. It's rare to see that in the franchise.

5. No one was actually in ANY danger. This is a feature, not a bug. Especially when a VAST number of episodes have life and death or high stakes, particularly in the current era of live action.

6. It's a catchy tune. It's fun!

For better and worse, new ideas were tried as frequently as exploring new civilizations. :D

"Symbiosis" via Picard was nicely done. Picard isn't as stuffy in other occasions, but kept a fine line that allowed them to both help both species while not breaking their prime directive.
 
There's no Justice in my next pick:

TNG: "Heart Of Glory"​

This one keeps the mystique of the Klingons, while expanding on them with a deft touch.

Geordi's VISOR transmitter is a neat trick, but could it have been woven into the story a little more deftly? It's an emergency situation but they're all acting cavalier as if waiting for their order from a fine restaurant, rather than a ship that's about to blow up because of a cascading failure in the engine... But as far as nitpicks go, it's for a scene that's just as awe-inspiring, if not more so, than the nitpicks that get raised. I love it all.

It's another reason why Geordi is one of my favorite characters. Also, remember 3:37 for when you have to sit through "Disaster" and wonder why Geordi had to beg Beverly as to where the hot wall with the plasma leak is, sheesh... season five was so awful at times that it made season one seem like a boatload of masterpieces by comparison, grr... give me season 1, for all its flaws, instead of most of season 5...

It's funny, the first seasons I love in this franchise are TNG, VOY, LD, and (maybe) SNW (we have to let it age a little first).

So I'm now going to save a Voyager, which I don't think I've done in this game yet. They really came out of the gate strong! I'd say season 1 and 4 were the clear high points of VOY.

I'll save "State Of Flux." It gave us Seska, one of Trek's all time great villains -- Martha Hackett, she's so damn good. (I mean, technically she was introed in "Parallax" but you know what I mean)

TOS: "A Taste Of Armageddon"​

Yeah, it is a bit pedestrian at times, but the idea of two warring worlds - both populated by whom were once the same society - finding a way to eschew actual destruction in favor of a grandiose spreadsheet with disintegrator chamber that people are more than happy to walk into... after five centuries, I doubt any of them would have remembered (or lived through) the original conditions that led to this intriguing setup, which is surprisingly explained outright in the story, but it also shows a larger cowardice between both their civilizations.

The one dude bringing up a ship destroyed fifty years (prior to Kirk's visit) is as interesting as Anon 7, who is not by any means an evil villain but genuinely and utterly in his core believes that their system is the one and only way to keep the peace. That's a nice twist.

Even nicer is that the folk leading Ventikar have been just as disturbingly noble. It's amazing neither side opted to build up a real army and fly on back to the other planet, then stomp a foot and chortle "moo-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha, gloaty-gloaty-gloat-gloat!" afterward. Which is just as poignant.

This story easily could have been a 2-parter, to fully flesh out both planets; even showing Ventikar spazzing over both Enterprise not being blown up and the lack of report from the latest "damages" that prompt herding the herd to disintegration chambers, which starts provoking two or three dozen more tangents. Then again, not spoonfeeding every possible side, or the ones the script writer(s) are most interested in (often understandably so), allows the viewer to imagine and juggle these nuances that would somehow keep this otherwise bizarre interplanetary situation going.

The wonderfulness of 60s Trek. And how many audiences weren't indulging in mind-altering substances while watching and/or making it?

I am not often moved to save TOS, but I love "The Conscience Of The King." I mean, a lot of Kirk's actions are shockingly reprehensible, and I hate that that degrading non-speaking Rand bit was Grace Lee Whitney's last day on set, but there's a core to this story that really works and it has such a cool tone.
