I hardly ever chime in around here any more, but any time I can heap scorn on Generations, I'll do my part.
Although I was generally disappointed by all the TNG movies, Generations was the only one to which I've had a violently negative reaction. I drove home yelling and screaming.
It's not just that the Nexus is a giant plot hole. It's not just that Kirk's death is lame and senseless and unnecessary. It's not just that Picard picks a time too close to the event to try to stop Soran.
It's that Soran gets what he wants. The Guinan echo makes it a point to state that "time has no meaning" in the Nexus. Given that, Soran succeeded in getting into the Nexus the first time around. Going back in time won't remove him from the Nexus or undo that.
For me, the movie basically ends with the crash of the Enterprise. The rest of the movie is just monkeys humping footballs.
As for First Contact ... it's got its share of deep flaws, too, but one of the things I hate the most is that Lilly has a lot of great lines that, by all rights, should have gone to Beverly. It should have been Beverly confronting Picard with the Moby Dick references and such. By that time, we'd been living with these characters for 10 years, and their relationship extended well beyond that. She disagreed with him, and she had the right -- both personally and professionally -- to explain it to him in terms he could understand. I think it was a horrible missed opportunity.
