The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026)

Damn, I forgot 3D is still a thing. I haven't gone to a 3D movie since...Avatar, an experience I absolutely loathed. I avoid 3D whenever possible.

Actually, I may have seen The Avengers in 3D because I was with friends who insisted on it.

Of the movies I've seen in 3D, I think the ones that were served best by it were Gravity, where it really drove home the vertiginous distances of orbital space, and the 2014 Godzilla, where it really gave a sense of how huge Godzilla was.

I haven't seen a 3D movie since before the pandemic, since I haven't gone to a movie theater since then. I wish I had a TV and/or disc player that could handle it, and a pair of 3D glasses to go with it, of course.

Not a big fan of 3D films. The polarized glasses they use makes the image appear really dim to me and hard to see sometimes, particularly with darkly-filmed scenes.

I've also tried to see films in IMAX (the most "recent" having been Trek09 at the IMAX theater at the Udvar-Hazy A&S Museum when it came out) and I really don't much like that experience either, as the screen is too big for me to take everything in visually. If there's a lot of fast action and motion, I almost feel like I get a bit of tunnel-vision and I start to miss potentially critical visual information. That realization hit me when I got the Trek09 BRD and I saw things on my TV that I don't ever recall seeing in the theater.

I guess I'm just a plain-vanilla theater guy. Suits me anyway... the other shit is too expensive these days. Something has to really pique my interest to shell out the kind of quatloos that theaters require, with the absurdly-priced snacks and drinks on top of the base ticket price. Guess I'm just an old fuddy-duddy...

Seeing this thing in IMAX would have basically meant a road trip I wasn't currently prepared to take, and as of today that option is gone anyway. :alienblush:

3D was put to excellent effect in Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008), in the scene where Brendan Fraser brushes his teeth and then spits out a big mouthful of water right at the audience!

The last good movie I saw in 3D was when they redid the first Jaws film in 3D. It looked great.

Before that it was the first Harry Potter film done in 3D. It also looked fantastic.

I love going to the theatre.

The last movie I saw in 3D was Ghost in the Shell.

During the fight scene in ankle-deep water, the plane formed by the water level came right out to your face.

one of my eyes extremely near sighted and lazy, so 3D doesn't work for me anymore.

My left eye's vision has been blurry and distorted since I had laser surgery for a retinal melanoma in my teens, and I couldn't see those "Magic Eye" 3D images that were popular for a while at the time, so I always assumed I wouldn't be able to see movies in 3D. But when I eventually tried it, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that I could after all.

My favorite 3D movie is My Bloody Valentine 2009. IMO it's the best 3D movie because it looks exactly like the 3D from those old view master toys. Plus 3D really lends itself well to horror.

Its also nice that you dont need a 3d TV to enjoy it. Just the blu ray and the 3D glasses that come with it

Were there any places where the 3D was really strong, as in strong visual pop-outs and such?

Not really. I could have seen it on a regular screen and would have been just as happy.

“The last time I went to the movies I got kicked out for bringing in my own food. My argument was that the concession stand prices were outrageous. Besides, it has been a long time since I had a barbecue.” - Steven Wright
