And I'll kick it off with axing "Twisted." I didn't even really realize it was a holodeck episode until I rewatched it for this list! But Sandrine's is all over this ep, it becomes their home base, the climax is set there, and the bar characters are played heavily. And beyond that, you can see the outlines of how they're trying to get it all to connect with the jealous Sandrine's bar action paralleling the whole Kes/Neelix/Paris story, and of course they're having these personal problems because their perception of the other person's motivations are... (sigh) twisted. It's trying to be a holodeck episode, it's just done in such a dreary, lifeless way I never noticed till just now! Cost of Living, it's an awful episode in many ways but I'll concentrate in the holodeck parts, a mudbath, some weirdo artists and a head in a bubble and in between all lf that Majel Barrett trying her best (and failing but I don't blame her) to make it look fun. And who thought pairing Lwaxana and Alexander would be entertaining ... I'll do everyone a favour and remove These Are The Voyages. It's pretty terrible really, with Riker and Troi stealing ENT's thunder in its finale. Also, choosing to sync the episode with The Pegasus was odd, and thematically just doesn't work. I'm removing A Matter of Perspective: it really doesn't qualify as a holodeck-specific episode, IMO. It is merely the best modeling tool available to the crew at the time. If it is a holodeck episode, DS9's Rapture would need to be considered as well. (ETA: as would Identity Crisis.) "Identity Crisis" and "RAPTURE"... yes, they used the holodeck as tools, but it did not take place there nearly as much as "A Matter of Perspective". I thought about this as we went over the list.
Fair point. Just to explain the reasoning, in this case it was a question of degree. In "Rapture" and "Identity Crisis", the holodeck is used briefly, whereas in "Matter Of Perspective", they spend a huge chunk of the episode sitting there watching holographic recreations. The holodeck felt to us like a primary setting for "Perspective", in a way it didn't for the other two. (Just to be clear, this is not a criticism of the elimination. "This doesn't feel to me like it belongs here" is ALWAYS acceptable elimination criteria )
His Way is out, it bored me to death and I was never a fan of the Odo/Kira pairing. I feel like I come for these contests just to eliminate Spirit Folk every time it pops up. But it won't die! It's a stupid idea to keep it running all the time when they have limited resources, Harry turns into a cow, the crew bleat on about this dreary holodeck program like it's something to treasure, whilst in reality it's just stereotypically stupid and somewhat racist. I am removing DS9 Season 7: “Take Me Out To The Holosuite” because it's just a stupid story about Sisko behaving like a five-year-old and everyone going along with it. The top was the ending when they pretended that they won the match. I can't imagine a real team acting like that. They would shame their most ardent supporters and be the laughing stock of the sporting world. Being a bad loser is way worse than just being a loser. I was a hundred percent with the Vulcan guy on that one! Sportsmanship means you lose with grace and concede defeat with dignity, dust yourself up and try to do better next time! This episode is an insult to sports and the people who practice them, everywhere.
