The Least Disliked Episode 2023: VOY Final Rounds

I actually don’t know if I agree that Tuvok was doing his job. His Captain made the decision to make Chakotay the first officer (which included being Tuvok’s commanding officer). Tuvok was going to train his security team to view their first officer as a potential threat even though he would also be their commanding officer? It seems pretty inappropriate chain of command wise and destructive. If he had made it more generic maybe like a training for a theoretical mutiny.

Also, why did he have such an unrealistic view of how Chakotay would behave after serving with him in the Marquis?

It was completely in character for Tuvok though - I got the impression he really didn't like Janeway's decision to make Chakotay first officer and he tried (successfully) to keep Chakotay out of the loop about what was really happening when Tom went undercover in season 2.

"Year of Hell" again for the same reasons.

Well, heaven forbid that there would actually be some actual conflict on Voyager... how did THAT get past the showrunners?

Yeah, I agree it was in character for Tuvok. I always thought they should have made the Marquis not get field commissions until the end of season 1. Like be on the ship without uniform/rank operating like a joint crew. Then it would have been more satisfying when they assumed their roles. Plus stuff like this would make more sense. Like “remember when there were two crews that didn’t trust each other?”

But I agree it seems Tuvok-ish under the circumstances. And, hey, he was right about Seska!

"Scorpion, Part II." I really would not want to watch it again right now (or ever again?). On the Delta Flyers pod they pointed out this scene in sickbay where Jennifer Lien is clearly so upset about her firing that she's not in character, it looks like she's about to cry trying to get her line out, and when she does she hustles off-camera as quickly as possible while looking away. It's horrible. (They talked about Kate Mulgrew remarking that the position Lien had been put into was so bad, Mulgrew wouldn't have been able to do it herself, she wouldn't have been able to come back and shoot a few more episodes after being fired. I've seen similar situations in my career, and it really is always just unbelievably ugly and degrading towards the actor in question)

I'd never noticed Lien's suffering in this scene before, but once it was pointed out it's really the only thing I see, this talented young woman trying to keep her head up and be professional after being abused, degraded, and fired. Horrible.

This is a tough choice now. I'll plump for Year of Hell, I, as even though I love the episode to death, the reset button at the end of the final part does the story no favours, and it's hard to rewatch knowing what is coming.

Yes, I agree it looks horrible. Never really noticed it though till you mentioned it.

Even so, I can't really fault the episode itself for an ugly decision taken behind the scenes.

Scorpion II for all the cool upgrades they gave Voyager and then tossed away. Changing the ship's exterior permanently would have been cool and is something they could have done at that point, stock footage was becoming less important with cgi so they could have tossed all the old shots of the ship.

Can't go after "Year of Hell". Reset button or no, it's just too good.

With Scorpion's unlamented exit, I return to "Lifesigns". It also hit the Reset button, but not in a good way.

Before and After mostly for Chakotay being the captain after Janeway's death, that never made sense to me. Tuvok as the highest ranking real officer should have taken command telling Chakotay and his provisional rank to go suck a lemon.
