The Least Disliked Episode 2023: VOY Final Rounds

I’ll cast the deciding vote for “Phage” and send it packing. It’s good, just early.

I’ll give my point for next round to “Equinox.” Lame cliffhanger, and I just don’t think this story works. Janeway’s arc doesn’t really track for me.

My vote for this round is "BEFORE AND AFTER".

We get a compressed look at what Kes' life might have been like had she stayed aboard... but it felt more like a signal to the audience that she is going bye bye.

And all the promotions get erased... poor Harry Kim.

I’m going to second Equinox this round for much the same reasons as Sakonna.

I also feel like they can’t decide what story is being told. Ransom seems tragic, Burke seems shady by nature and Marla gets kicked around (like what was she supposed to do?). Plus the psychotic doctor.

It always feels to me like they wanted to write a tragic story of hard choices (“there but for the grace of God go I…”) and then backed out and made them more sinister in odd ways. So instead of being a narrative in shades of grey it’s just inconsistent.

Then why pick on the episode where he gets the promotion he deserved?

Still choosing "Lineage". There are a few moments I liked (especially the end)... but the others here were stronger.

Because it took it away within the same episode... basically making it so it didn't happen at all.

Essentially, it's part of why I don't like "ENDGAME"... you get a look at their future, but half that episode is wasted on it because it was erased completely.

(While the same can be said about "THE VISITOR" or "All Good Things...", for example, those are truly superior episodes because they relied more on the characters than the time travel gimmick.)

"Year of Hell" - I'm not a fan of timetravel and the growth Seven goes through in this episode is what I would like to have seen in seasons 4 and 5 - I think Tuvok would be a better mentor for her than the EMH, she should wear a uniform after a while, etc - I think Seven had too little character development over all for the amount of time she was on screen.

I'd almost vote "Year of Heck" for the same reasons as what @Summer Solstice said as those were good, but LINEAGE crossed the line for me - the other episodes are far stronger, anyhow...

Next vote is for "Equinox", for Janeway's thorough nastiness and lack of sympathy for a crew in the depths of PTSD. Maybe they wouldn't have gone rogue if she had acted differently.

Nah, the Equinox crew deserved no sympathy, they were a bunch of serial killers. PTSD is not an excuse for anything they did.
