To me seeing a film the way a filmmaker intended (by which I mean aspect ratio and framing and such) is an essential part of appreciating the film, and I feel like if you're doing pan-and-scan or god forbid motion smoothing or such, then what you're watching is essentially an alternate version. I'll be the first to call myself a film snob, though.
I do have a 50" plasma and Blu ray, but not 4K or HDR or such, much less a massive sound system (though I do have 5.1). I'd say I'm getting as close as I can to intent without destroying my bank account in the process, heh.
