The Last Jedi - Actually Widely Hated?

To me seeing a film the way a filmmaker intended (by which I mean aspect ratio and framing and such) is an essential part of appreciating the film, and I feel like if you're doing pan-and-scan or god forbid motion smoothing or such, then what you're watching is essentially an alternate version. I'll be the first to call myself a film snob, though.

I do have a 50" plasma and Blu ray, but not 4K or HDR or such, much less a massive sound system (though I do have 5.1). I'd say I'm getting as close as I can to intent without destroying my bank account in the process, heh.

I'll just end with this... https://www.widescreen.org/examples.shtml It even includes examples from the Treks and the Wars! :p

Yeah, back when DVD came out I was one of the people saying "this is silly and expensive, VHS is fine" etc, but eventually my views on the subject totally changed. I am still not a snob, as I have quite low end equipment, but at least I know what I am missing, and try to get the best I can on a limited budget (and space).

Anyway, so how about Last Jedi movie, eh??

And if the best I can afford is DVD? Why belittle such a choice?

Also, I have watched Blu Ray on a 50 inch and it was not somehow more enjoyable experience for me. YMMV and probably does.

I definitely see improvements between Blu ray and DVD, but it could depend on the disc, the viewing conditions, the tv, the tv's settings, etc.

I hope nobody would knock you for owning the best set-up you reasonably can.

This conversation went into a direction I didn't intend for it to. I just wanted to make an off hand tongue in cheek rib but it got way more serious than I intended. I apologize.

@fireproof78 Glad I’m not the only one who gets a headache from Blu-ray. Somehow it feels like watching TV on ketamine or something. Everything feels a little too real.

On the other hand, I’m really surprised Disney hasn’t released the original non-special edition OT yet. Anyone know why that is? Does George Lucas still have some kinda control over that?

Why don't you respect my decision to call out other people's invalid way of watching films?
There are many, better ways to recommend how you think people should watch a given film. Being aggressively critical is certainly not one of them in this forum. In your alter posts in this thread you seem to have softened your approach, and that is good.

Moving on..... (rats, no Vader emojis.)

HDTVs and 4K have this obnoxious feature called motion smoothing. It creates what some call the “soap opera effect.” Admittedly watching with this feature for films is very distracting while it does help with watching sports. Disabling the feature makes watching most entertainment far more bareable.

I don’t believe this is a possibility until after the Fox/Disney merger closes later this year. I think we’ll, at the very least, see new 4K transfers for the OT, TPM and TFA by next year. (AOTC and ROTS were mastered in 2k so unless they do special editions on those, they may not bother.) I can’t say this for certain but I would not be surprised if Lucas had a clause in the sale forbidding the release of the unaltered OT. I really hope I’m wrong about that though.

Let's just put this out there right now: there is no such thing as an "original non-Special Edition OT".

Ask 15 different people what they mean when they say that they want "the original theatrical cuts of Star Wars" and you will get 15 different answers.

Lucasfilm is not going to waste time and money trying to manufacture something that doesn't actually exist just to placate a portion of the SW fanbase that is both extremely small and doesn't even have a consensus viewpoint about what they want.

That sort of clause is something I can well imagine.

Motion smoothing is horrible, but even without it I find Blu-rays just a little too clear. Suddenly feels more like I’m watching actors on a set than characters in a real setting. Maybe it’s just something to get used to, but I don’t remember feeling the same when VHS made grudging way for DVD.

Yeah. that's what I experience. Everything feels too crisp and my eyes do not like it.

Yeah, I watched GotG on Blu Ray at a friends. I had to keep looking away because of the headache.

I get it. It is also not how the filmmakers intend you to watch their work. Disable the feature and it is MUCH better.

Not sure what you're talking about. When people say original they mean the movie that was released in theaters in 1977 on 35mm film. And it certainly exists because you can get a 4k master of it online.

Such a film does not exist.

Within days of the original SW film's release in 1977, different theaters had different cuts of it.

What people think of as being the "original theatrical cut" of the first SW film is a fabrication.

Yes, it can, but those other movies and TV shows have never equalled the popularity of the original trilogy. Also, these were never kids movies. They're family movies, like Back to the Future or Indiana Jones. Kids can certainly like them, but they're one of those 'great for all ages' films.

Yeah, because that perfectly illustrates what I'm saying. I guess we'll just see how well it goes on? I've noticed several fans on this thread (even people who liked the prequels) say they aren't going to buy tickets for the next one.

Maybe you're new to fandom :guffaw:

You realise declaring a boycott of something you "hate" only to keep watching it anyway so you can comment on how much worse the next one is is a well established pastime for us?

There's even a name for it: "hate watching".

God. Good point. But then there’s also the people who aren’t huge fans. I always think of fans and fandom as slightly different.

You think it’ll do well?

You are just acting a fool now. When people say "original cuts" people mean without the digital effects of the special editions. You know that. Don't pretend otherwise.

....

I would agree that the problem is with the motion smoothing feature, and not with the blu-ray format.
The first thing I did when I got my HDTV was to find this particular feature and turn it off.

That version of the film is no more an "original" version than the currently available cut is, but nice try.
