The Last Jedi - Actually Widely Hated?

Of course there is a market. There has been one since DVD came out. Whether or not it is enough to justify it to LFL (it certainly wasn't to Lucas) is the question. And, I'm doubtful that they will.
It felt like more of a personal thing to Lucas - he didn't want people to see the pre specialized versions, because the specialized versions are his vision for the movie now. He didn't find any value in seeing his vision back in '77. Many people disagree.

These discs are proof that there is a market for "despecialized" editions of Star Wars. Even though they are awful transfers of the not quite original cut, they are now highly collectible and sell for almost $100 for some used DVDs. A real 4k or at least Blu Ray release would sell very very well.

There is a site that lets you get fan restorations of 35mm Star Wars releases. I don't know if it's quite piracy since they never received a cease and desist for Lucasfilm, but I think it's kind of borderline, so I won't be posting any links here. If interested, feel free to Google for it though - it's quit interesting. They have a full 4k restoration of a 35mm print that cost them over $10,000 to produce.

I still think Lucas’ ego will hold back the release. I really believe there was a clause in the contract. Despite the number of fans who would definitely buy day 1. I know I’d be there for it. Im gathering regardless, if the slightest chance it may come out, it won’t be until about April of 2020 once Ep 9 comes out. Gives them the opportunity to do a mega Skywalker saga boxset. Perfect opportunity for the proper release of all versions of all of the films.

Yes, but right now I also see LFL respecting Lucas' wish, since he considered the 77 film "unfinished."

I don't think that's the best way to release "despecialized versions". I think the mega box set will have the best looking versions that most people are familiar with - which would be the special edition blu rays.

If they ever release the despecialized editions it will be separate, filled with extras, and very expensive.

And yet I would still buy it. Lol

I don't think Disney would pass up such an opportunity to throw a bone to the fandom. I think that one day, we will see an official pre-special edition restoration.

Obviously any such release would be controversial. For example, should they smooth out the film grain like they would for a normal release? Or should they release a straight transfer, which will look awful on modern TVs, just as an academic exercise? Is the goal to see a release for which the source was an original 35 mm reel, or is it to see exactly what was on the reel without changing anything?

Disney is always releasing special edition sets of their own movies, which is why I’m surprised they haven’t done that with Star Wars. Could be something they’ll look at further down the line.

I for one want an archival version meaning the best video and audio quality possible with as many of the different audio mixes and cuts as can be put on a disc maintaining quality at a relatively reasonable price ($40-50 a film is pricey but makes sense.)

They never had to deal with a director who was strongly against seeing their own original vision being released. Unless there is a clause in their purchase saying that they cannot do this, they have the legal rights. The ethics of doing so are kind of dubious though.

Even this is hard to interpret in this case. The best possible video quality given the source material? Or the best possible video quality, even if it involves grain removal and color correction?

Even if it involves grain removal and color correction. I meant to put remastered in there. I only hope they use the same color sources as used on some of the fan restorations out there. 4K77 is pretty incredible from what I’ve seen.

A clause is what I thought. I think it will be interesting to see what happens when Lucas dies.

Well ... Disney. I guess it depends if there’s some sort of legal thing or they’re just respecting his wishes.

Or if they just haven't gotten around to it yet.

I thought Fox owned home video rights to the OT. Disney only gets the chance to do this with the purchase of Fox...

They should strike a deal with Criterion Collection.
