The Last Airbender Full Trailer

I just finished watching the whole series for the first time last week, and it was awesome. I actually got so hooked by Season 1 on Netflix that I went out and purchased the rest of the of the series so I wouldn't have to wait for discs in the mail.

I definitely hope the movie does the show justice. The main thing that makes me nervous is that they're going to leave out the humor. I don't necessarily care if Aang is that funny, but Sokka needs to be ridiculously sarcastic and hungry all the time, otherwise he just isn't Sokka.

Also, the old guy with the fire-bending...I'm assuming that's Zuko's uncle, but he looks way too angry. I want to see him being jolly and drinking copious amounts of tea.

^That's my concern too. The trailers just seem so relentlessly gloomy and serious, more Matrix-like with all the talk about Aang being the One, fulfilling his destiny, people doing cool things in slow-mo, a very subdued colour palate...

The Last Airbender does take its subject matter seriously when it's time to do so, as it should, but in no way would I call it gloomy.

Thinking about giving the series a shot. I caught a few episodes over the weekend on one of the cartoon channels, had it on in the background (they were doing a marathon). I thought it was alright, but stopped when I realized I was watching some episodes from the middle of the final season. The show is heavily serialized, right? Perhaps it's time I started from the beginning with Netflix streaming...

The simple truth is there are things that can be done well in animation that don't work in live action and a hunger wracked sarcastic Sokka in an otherwise grim and dramatic movie runs the risk of running against the grain.

Personally I'm more concerned that MNS's direction with mean none of the actors will get to express any emotion at all and just stand around like stunned lemmings.

^^ That is precisely my concern. I fear MNS' pretentious seriousness is going to ruin the sense of fun and adventure that is the core of the series.

That would also be a concern for me. I'm looking forward to the movie, but I'm hoping they get to be lighthearted as well as serious when it calls for it.

So the reviews on rottentomatoes.com are looking pretty dire at 7%. Some fun comments are:

Where to start with this one? How about this: If any movie ever warranted a class-action lawsuit against the filmmakers, it’s The Last Airbender.
--Keith Phipps
The picture drags along the ground like a fresh corpse, treating its own myth as homework and the participants as burdens, while feeling around a fantastically wasted world of weathered environments and ornate set design
--Brian Orndorf
Where's the fun? We're talking about characters that can throw fire and water. Where's the excitement and sense of wonder?
--Bill Clark
The Last Airbender is an agonizing experience in every category I can think of and others still waiting to be invented.
--Roger Ebert
I believe M. Night can ruin the world.
--Jordan Hoffman
I'm sorry to see that such a great show got such an apparently crappy movie, but I'm glad I watched it before these reviews would've scared me off from checking out "some kid's cartoon."

I knew as soon as I heard that M. Night Shyamalan was doing the film that most, if not all, of the sense of wonder and adventure would be eliminated. I'm so glad I saw the cartoon before this, I probably would have been completely turned off from it otherwise.

That said, I'm still thinking about seeing the movie, just to see for myself how badly they botched it.

It sounds like the visual aspects of the film may be worthwhile, as long as you see it in 2D. And there's some consensus that Dev Patel is the standout performer of the film.

I am going to see it tonight at midnight, but I'm on the fence on how I should view it. I've seen the entire series, several times over, and from what I've seen of the movie I am weary.

I do not like that they changed the pronunciation of Aang or the fact that only really powerful firebenders like Iroh, Ozai, (presumably) Azula, and probably Aang and Zuko after they learn from the dragons (and most likely Combustion Man) can generate their own fire. All other firebenders need a source fire. It takes away some of the fierceness and power of the firebenders in my opinion.

Oh dear, this is so disappointing. I just watched the series for the first time about a month ago, and I loved it. I was really hoping the movie would be good.

Isn't this also the first of a trilogy?

Not bloody likely after the box office is counted.
Well you have to understand that there will be many, and I mean many parents taking their children to see this film. I mean just look at how "How to Train Your Dragon" dominated "Iron Man 2".

"How to Train Your Dragon," "King-Fu Panda," and the various Pixar movies, among others, do good business at the box office not just because they're family/kids movies, but because they're also well received. We didn't see a sequel to "The Golden Compass" for a reason.

I know, I know, quality doesn't always equal box-office, but I'm sensing more "Eragorn" than "Harry Potter" in this franchise's future.

Yeah, but Eragon was based on an overhyped, poorly written novel, whereas The Last Airbender was based on one of the best cartoons--heck, one of the best TV shows--of the last decade. So TLA turning out to be poor really stings.

Oh, I agree on the original show's quality and how it's really too bad that the biggest chance at mainstream advertising it's going to get is this (most likely) dud of a movie. I just meant that it's unlikely we'll see the other two films after the reception this one is getting. Even a family friendly movie with a built-in fan base can fail at the box office, if it's bad enough.

Not that I'd care to see two more bad adaptations by M. Night for this franchise.

What if someone else directed the sequels?

I really am curious to watch this movie just to see how bad they fuck it up and see if it would even be worth it to attempt to fix it with sequels.

Well, at least the prospect of the movie got me to start watching the cartoon  For that, I am thankful
