The Last Airbender Full Trailer

Unfortunately, the movie reminds me of one of those Robert Halmi/Hallmark TV movies/mini-series but with better FX.

The full trailer came out put yesterday, so I am surprise no one have posted it here yet.

I'm not. Avatar is a kids cartoon. Probably not a bad one, but still the appeal to me seems limited. I for one was not impressed by that trailer. To me it looks like yet another CGI fest with a child lead actor who can't act. Also, M Night Shyamalan?

So? Just because a story is designed to be accessible to kids doesn't mean it can't be brilliant and compelling for adults. All "kids' cartoon" means is something that doesn't have sex, graphic violence, or cuss words. It doesn't mean something mindless or boring. I mean, come on, don't we owe it to our kids to give them the very best we're capable of creating? Kids aren't stupid. They're as capable of enjoying rich, stimulating, imaginative storytelling as adults are -- maybe more so in some ways.

Avatar: The Last Airbender was definitely the best "children's show" of the past decade. It was also one of the best shows, period, of the past decade. That "kids' show" was a thousand times smarter, funnier, more poignant, and more imaginative than any of the sleazy reality shows or grossout comedy films that are allegedly "for adults." It's the freshest fantasy world I've seen anywhere in mass-media fiction in ages, it's populated by richly drawn characters, it has complex and compelling storylines and themes -- it's more than smart enough for adults, even if it doesn't have blood and sex and four-letter words.

Appa and the element bending looked cool, but it's all coming across as a little too rigid and po-faced for my liking. Aang is looking too serious for his first season self. Anyway, we'll see....

Ooo, Appa appears in the trailer?! I must see this! I think my number one concern about the movie is M.Night making everything deadly serious and pretentious particularly Aang. I love Aang because he's silly while at the same time being a responsible hero.

I really enjoyed the cartoon, it was darker than what you normally get with cartoons and actually had a storyline from beginning to end and not just stand-alone episodes. It was more akin to an anime than the usual fare you get. Even shows some of the better cartoons from North America like a Gargoyles, Batman: TAS, etc... Didn't really stick with one main storyline from beginning to end.

Exosquad did more or less. I really enjoyed that in Avatar, I just think a lot of the elements don't translate well to live-action. The comedy which you can play off in a cartoon seems pretty stupid when you see it in live-action. The biggest thing I always thought would be incredibly difficult to translate is the ages of the characters. How many movies do you watch where young child actors actually can pull off and deliver on leading roles and critical roles in the movie and be believable?

You miscast a role and you have Jake Lloyd in The Phantom Menace... It's actually one of the reasons why I don't have any big problems with the ages of characters in A Song of Ice and Fire being 'aged up' or played by older actors portraying younger ages. You don't want a cheese-fest by an inept younger actor in a dramatic role.

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes! I will see this movie in the theater! :D

Which is why most of the main characters of TLA are older in the film than in the animated series -- ranging from Noah Ringer at 13, a year older than the animated Aang, to Jackson Rathbone at 26, 11 years older than the animated Sokka. Not to mention that the storyline's no doubt going to be stretched out to cover more than a year, to accommodate Ringer's aging over the course of the trilogy (if the first film does well enough to warrant sequels, that is).

What startled me was when I learned that Azula was supposed to be only 14. No real 14-year-old could be that powerful, mature, and self-possessed. I'm sure they'll cast her older in the movie. Although getting someone worthy of the character, able to play the role even half as well as Grey DeLisle, is going to be quite a challenge.

Azula is awesome. I loved her in the series and yea it would be fairly impossible to find an young actress to pull that off at that age and not come off as throwing 'temper tantrums' because of a young appearance.

I'm still really concerned at how Aang's actor is. There's only been snippets of dialogue in the the last two trailers from him, but it sounds a bit wooden.

There I agree with you. Unless whoever M. Night finds is a young female Marc Alaimo, I doubt I'll be impressed.

Azula and Katara was fourteen (probably fifteen by Sozin's Comet)

Sokka, Suki and Mai were fifteen

Zuko was sixteen.

It might be worth remembering that Zuko and Azula weren't just any teenagers, they're members of a very powerful royal dynasty in the midst of a century long war. Childhood ends very quickly for such people.
Times gone by, people of that position have been known to rule nations and command armies at that age and younger...with varied results.

Please point out where exactly I said that this isn't the case. I merely pointed out its limited appeal to a larger audience.

I find that very hard to believe.

So I guess you'll be going to see it then? ;)
