The Kelvin Timeline Starship Thread

What does STO call the blue bolts? They may have decided they were pulse phasers or something instead of torpedo turrets as in the script.

The script might call them torpedo turrets, but they act nothing like Torpedoes seen anywhere else in the franchise, or even in the same movie.

I seem to recall in one of the Kelvin-movies, in a "crew is running around busy doing random tasks before a battle" scene there is a brief shot of 1-2 foot long rocket shell looking things being loaded into a magazine of some type.

That was on the Enterprise on the approach to vulcan. We later see the Enterprise fire Torpedoes at the Narada as it is crumbling into the black hole. The torpedoes looked and acted nothing like the rapid fire turrets seen on the Kelvin

true, but it was the closest thing we could potentially attribute to mini-torpedo launching turrets

Fair enough. I did just rewatch the scene with the Kelvin fighting off the Narada. Unless the Kelvin is 90% cargo Bays loaded with pallets of torpedoes, there's no way those things are torpedoes. Those turrets are firing hundreds of rounds per minute.

iu

If the turrets are similar to more modern CIWS systems then I guess I could get behind that. Not full on torpedo launchers like we typically see, but close range anti torpedo missile systems.

In STO a "Quad Micro-Photon Torpedo Launcher" is something you can have as part of a Kelvin bundle in the Mudd's store. They're basically small Kelvin torpedoes that spray out in a cluster.

I don't know though, but it just made me think of that for a sec.

huh, okay. That creates more questions than it answers

They use the torpedo sound when they’re firing in the movie, and are blue-white like TOS torpedoes

The Kelvin’s turrets in STO are not specifically defined in the game. They’re just point defence cannons, they do kinetic damage like most torpedoes though.

The micro torpedo launcher mentioned above is from the Jellyfish

So I've probably watched ST09 half a dozen times, and it never occurred to me that the Kelvin used phaser beams in the opening, not pulses like the Enterprise later in the film.

It never stood out to me, probably because at the time that is what I'd expect from Starfleet ships.
there is that nice shot of the crew member flying out through a hull breach past two beam turrets while they're firing, though

Spacecraft name news!

STO has provided a name for one of the various Federation shuttlecraft. The Warrant/Takayama-type is now the Class F shuttle (Kelvin timeline).

I can’t believe the KT version of the TOS shuttle was confirmed as being the KT version of the TOS shuttle before the SNW version was.

Hopefully the SNW shuttle can be the Class E shuttle. With such a different hull it can’t be the same model as the TOS one.

I don't see why not. It's a different artistic interpretation, it's not a different ship in-universe. Just like the Enterprise/Connie herself. See it like how different actors can play the exact same character.
Perhaps.
I struggle to tell colleagues apart at work so I can easily accept the different actors to look like the same character.
The Enterprise interview refits a few times, easily done.
But it wouldn’t be worth to rebuilt a shuttle like that. It’s gotta be a different class.

I find that excuse to be unsatisfactory.

Hi Peeps

Random Kelvin-timeline starship observation I recently made - of the Enterprise from the 09 movie: the bussards remain unlit (dark inky blue/black) while at impulse - and only seen to spin/glow blue when at warp.

This may have been obvious to most, however Ive only just realised this. It should be noted that, as of Trek Beyond, the bussards are then seen glowing and spinning while at impulse, as well as warp.

Edit: I’ve just noticed that the bussards are spinning / glow in Into Darkness also. So would appear to just unique to Trek 09 only.

Whelp, now I got to rewatch it to confirm ;)

I remember reading about this way, way back when in some article or other. Also the nacelles going dark when the warp core is ejected at the end.

I liked that they paid attention to these things, despite people piling on about breweries and ship sizes and whatnot. They knew their stuff.
