The James Bond Film Discussion Thread (With Bonus Lazenby!)

I have heard it said elsewhere that the James Bond franchise changed forever with the activation of the ejector seat in Goldfinger.

Ahhh Guy. I would call all of his stuff crap except that Goldfinger is clearly genius. But I feel confident in saying that Goldfinger paved the way for everything wrong with the Moore era and beyond (as well as Diamonds are Forever, of course).

Now Terrance Young, there was a filmmaker.
I personally think Goldfinger is close to peak movie Bond but in Hollywood it is very possible to get too much of a good thing, especially when it comes to sequels.

I would love to trash it because I hated every other movie Hamilton did, but there is not a wrong note in that whole movie. Everyone is perfect. Especially Connery.

Oh. And it gave us Q. REALLY Q.

But I still like Thunderball better. It was like Young looked at the "new" Bond blueprint that Goldfinger gave us and said "I can do that. In WIDESCREEN!"

Bond's reaction to the ejector seat said everything.

Just in time for Goldenye's 30th anniversary!
I caught it while looking for something to watch the other night. I probably hadn't seen it since it came out. I missed the beginning, but quickly caught up. Pretty good. I probably didn't know Sean Bean back then - he looks insanely young! I liked Brosnan's choices as Bond. Plus, he was (and still is) gorgeous. The Girl was cool: plucky, brave & smart.

GE is in my top 5 Bond. Maybe my favorite, but I hedge my bets.

It's definitely the best film since Connery. There may have been movies with higher highs since then (even in the Brosnan films) but none that are more consistently good throughout the film.

Yes, Casino Royale is a masterpiece. But I didn't have as much FUN.

Natalya and Kara (from The Living Daylights) are two of my favorite Bond girls. I think it really works for me to pair Bond with a woman from outside his world of violence and death.
Absolutely. Give me a girl out of her comfort zone who rises to the occasion rater than Bond's equal who half the time winds up just a damsel in distress or is otherwise excised from the final battle. Tracy, Natalya, Kara etc

Not that a trained professional Bond girl can't work of course. Controversial opinion but I think Holly Goodhead is a way better Bond girl than XXX. Anya talks a good game but rarely shows it us, meanwhile Holly starts slow but by the end she's kicking arse and flying a fucking space shuttle while XXX is tied to a chair.

Goldeneye is my second favourite Bond film after OHMSS. Brosnan is perfect and the cast is top notch- in fact I'd say the only film that possibly equals it on the villain front is Live and Let Die (as in the villains as a group)

My top five, if anyone's interested ;)

1. OHMSS
2. Goldeneye
3. The Living Daylights
4. Skyfall
5. The Spy Who Loved Me

Probably the most capable and best-trained Bond Girl was Kissy Suzuki. That woman climbed a volcano in a bikini and barefoot, climbed down again, swam to the mainland while being shot at from a helicopter, and then lead an army of ninjas into battle not even having taken the time to get dressed. And for all that, her name wasn't even mentioned in the movie.

Hard to believe this will be 50 years old in just three days.

I want Scaramanga's shirt. And I love his junk. The ship, I mean...

Hai Fat must be bones by now in his mausoleum. Fifty years!

Nothing dates a Bond movie faster than the 70's energy crisis.

Crooked ship in the harbor converted to headquarters. Brilliant! Would make for a cool private residence these days.

Best villain's lair ever in Bond.

Absolutely. The level of her professional competence and stamina are truly mind-boggling. The gods of Olympus are chattering to themselves, "See? This mortal has exceeded all our expectations! Let's make her one of us!"

Christopher Lee really deserved to be in a better Bond movie. On the other hand, this is the Bond movie that really needed him most. Imagine that movie without Lee.
I'm not going to lie. I actually like this movie but that's because I first saw it when I was about ten years old and this is a Bond movie that is perfect for ten year olds.
