The "I told you so" thread...

And? So that one aspect means windows are useless?
Virtually, at least when one has advanced viewscreen technology. Most of what a starship would see through a window would be small points of light.

The point is, that same material would protect them against the cosmic radiation you were talking about. This isn't glass we are dealing with.

Well on top of that - it presumably offers perfectly sufficent protection to the crew as otherwise they would not have put it there!

Plus it cracked after the ceiling!

Have you guys seen those windows in fancy corporate boardrooms that can literally become totally opaque with the push of a button?

I'm thinking they might use something like that here too.

How? Isn't it transparent? If it's transparent to visible light then enemy ships could shine bright laser beams through the window to endanger the bridge crew.

i'm just gonna laugh lol

if they can survive the lens flares of the 23rd century they can survive any kind of bright lights lol

But this window IS ALSO A viewscreen, it does double duty.
My point is that you don't need something that does double duty because the viewscreen is already a better 'window' than a real window.

Reaction time would be too slow.

Perhaps it should just be laughed at and not taken seriously at all.

But I've already seen Galaxy Quest.

I don't let it detract my enjoyment of the movie.

But, I also see no problem with having a window on the bridge.

Watch it again. I don't think you got the joke. Pay special attention to the nitpicky fans at the convention.

Until power goes out and you have no idea what is right in front of your ship.
If your power is gone does it really matter?

---------------

Sure, to know where the heck you are in space and if you are fixing to be pulled into a planet or something, heh.

If I were exploring strange new worlds, I'd love to be able to see them with my own eyes. In fact, I'd insist on it.
That's just because you've never used the fancy viewscreens they have in the 23rd century.

OK. Your ship is without power and you're being pulled into a planet. Enjoy watching your window melting on your way down.

lol, yes, still, i see no problem with having a window, none at all, useless or not, i don't see why they can't have one

being useless isn't a reason not to have one, lots of things are useless, chairs are useless, i think everyone should stand at all times while on duty, especially the captain, he should be alert

We have a winner.

Like I've said before, the window adds a human element. Seeing an image on a viewscreen is very different than seeing something with your own eyes.

Exactly. Try staring at the sun for a few minutes through a pane of clear glass.

---------------

It isn't glass, sigh

I'm sure by the 23rd century they have the technology that we have here in the 21st century to make a transparent screen or window opaque, i believe we use liquid crystals to do it, they probably have technology way more advanced that can change the amount of light that gets through the window
