I never got why exactly that was supposed to be a problem in the first place. So what if it's a window?

A window in place of a viewscreen on the bridge makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

But it only matters to people who want things to make sense.

That window also doubled as a working view screen.

and how can you tell the difference between a window and a working viewscreen... their graphics displays would be exceptional... that could have easily been a picture and the crack you saw could have just been the wall breaking apart... or it might have been transparent aluminum with a video interface...

That's what it looked like to me. They were showing video communications on it after all.

Because it looked cool. Plus if they lost all power they can at least look out the window as they fall towards a planet or something. lol

It would probably also be much more difficult to create a window that filters out harmful radiation than to create a sensor array that doesn't transmit such radiation to the viewscreen in the first place.

You are assuming the window is made of glass. It could be made of the same material as the ship, just transparent.

Having a window is great, cause if you lose power, or the system that controls the viewscreen, you can still see out the window and see what's going on in front of you.

The point is, that same material would protect them against the cosmic radiation you were talking about. This isn't glass we are dealing with.
