Now that the first episode is out, its still largely the same show.
It's interesting to hear the producer talk about the things that they have had to change to avoid getting sued by the BBC.

I caught episode 1 today. A lot of fun, obviously. I watch the show for the 3 idiots cocking about as much or more than the cars.
The eboladrome and dead celebrity segment were a little strange, but funny in that British way that I've come to expect.
As far as old TG, was the track physically anywhere near the studio? This one is pretty far away from wherever they're filming the studio parts, no way around that.
Did we like the chatty "American"? If they don't overuse him I think he'll be OK.

Enjoyed episode 1, it needs some tweaking, particularly in the studio segments which felt a bit forced and not all that funny. I'm not sold on The American either but I think I could be if it evolves a little from a one joke pony. The filmed segments with the cars though, back on form and great fun. It certainly looks like they will be able to pick up where Top Gear left off and carry on with few issues.
The magic is definitely there, and I'm loving the new show. After two episodes, I'm still not fond of "The American." I realize they're trying to (1) better connect with an American audience and (2) going for a sort of anti-Stig, but the character so far has no endearing traits.
I guess they can't do "Star in a Reasonably Priced Car" either because the tent and the track are too far apart, or the BBC will sue.

I'm quite happy with what they're doing to fill in that hole, honestly. Never liked the original segment anyway. (Never quite understood why anyone gave a fig about what an actor or other "celebrity" had to say, think, or do outside of their actual job.)
Anything would be, to be fair, but this was a bad decision nonetheless.
Racing/rally drivers rarely have the charisma to make good entertainment, hence Clarkson's original view of the Stig "it's a racing driver and thus we don't care for his opinions as all racing drivers are dull".
View Ken Block in his two Top Gear appearances - great driver, gives the impression you would punch him repeatedly in the face within five seconds of him opening his mouth.
I am loving The Grand Tour personally. But yeah I would go with The American being the weakest part of it. The only funny thing about him so far is Clarkson's introductions. Ben Collins has said he'd love to be part of it so I think they should use him. What better person to be involved than 'He Who Used To Be The Stig'.
Also, I thought the idea of killing off celebrities followed by James saying "Does that mean he's not coming on then?" would get old. It's still funny but I'm wondering how long it will continue to be funny for.
Are we seeing all the minor jokes in the opening to Conversation Street too? Jeremy in high heels this week for instance. I must admit I missed any jokes from the first two but the first one got the American audience laughing.
I don't think we believed that the house being demolished in this week's episode was really Jeremy's house though. I'm thinking he might have lived there before but has now moved, but definitely doesn't live there any more.

There's been some rumours about other things they won't let The Grand Tour do, including not letting James say "Oh c*ck" but I think some have been misquoted.
I posted on my Facebook after the first episode that in case there's any confusion. If I now say "Top Gear" I mean "The Grand Tour". If I say "not Top Gear" I mean "Top Gear".

It apparently was Jeremy's house but he had planned to have it demolished to make way for a new construction on the site. Shame as it looked like a nice historic building, and apparently worth £4 million!

I'm sure a lot of that value was in the land, which will presumably be intact for the new building.
Episode 4 was pretty great, just for May's 3-Little-Pigs themed sustainable vehicle, not to mention his "raping the countryside" to keep it going.

I loved this episode but I couldn't help but think that Clarkson's car would generate a lot of complaints. Personally I found it hilarious.
Most of the complaints were from Clarkson. Oh the smell!

So, since Clarkson's house demolition was planned, what was the REAL reason for having the show held in Whitby again this week?
I recall a lot of native american tribes believed you showed respect for eaten animals by using all their parts. Clarkson's problem was that he never took the time to remove the stray flesh from the bones, which is what led to the smell and maggot issues. Properly-designed, a bone car may also have been the safest of the three in an accident. It also would have had a good Mad Max vibe.
