The Future of DS9

Arpy

Vice Admiral
Admiral
So, I just finished watching the first video of Alone Together, a spare read-through series on Alexander Siddig's YouTube channel. It's interesting because it seems to take place in the PIC universe while maybe adhering to some of the DS9 lit -- e.g. Garak is castellan of Cardassia.

It was okay and I look forward to the next episode. And it has me thinking about the future of DS9. Where do you see the characters at this point? Are they where the trek lit has taken them? Where we saw them in What We Left Behind? Where they are in this series? (The two in it so far anyway.) What did you think of it?

This was fine. I agree I never thought Dax and Bashir should be together and I never saw any chemistry between either Jadzia or Ezri, so the revelation of this fan theory I found appropriate. Bashir remaining on the station is disappointing. I would've thought he would be part of Starfleet Medical somewhere beyond DS9. Garak. Is still Garak. This fan set up could be right before the "What we left behind" doc hypothetical bonus season.

By the time of PIC? Bashir should be taking a whack at Chief of Starfleet Medicine, if for a spell.

Garak being Castellan is fine (and that'll be a HARD job).

Kira probably has retired after shaping the Bajoran militia up.

Quark is retired on his own moon at last.

Worf is an ambassador to the Klingon Empire, though he grows tired. For every house or captain he sways to be a stalwart Federation ally, there's a dozen more that think nothing of raiding or violence, and he feels like he has done all that he can for the most part.

Miles O'Brien has finally stopped suffering and has watched his daughter grow up, maybe not to a starfleet officer but a up and coming artist, and his son at Earth Spacedock as a rising engineer.

Jake is a great writer, in his later years he has revitalized 'SpecFi' and Fantasy fiction for a spell, influenced by his Father.

Morn has opened up a school for comedy.

Odo is working in the great link, and is successful, though with some bumps. I do believe his New Dominion will allow him and others to take solid shape and help the Gamma Quadrant, in time. He longs to wear that Tux again.

And, of course, Nog is a captain in Starfleet.

My view into the future of DS9 is highly influenced by the books, that I really enjoyed a lot. Therefore, I don't want to say where I see them in the future, but formulate a request, where I want to see them in the future: on the screen. Of course, a revival is 'out of reach' and it's clear, that I can't have them all together, but: If Spock could show up in DSC and Seven could have been put into PIC (highly unmotivated in my eyes), then it would be easy to have a O'Brien-cameo or something like that in one or another upcoming season, too, or wouldn't it?

(I’ll fill the rest of this in later. Warning for writers: story ideas ahead. Steal them if you like, but know they’re there.)

DS9 is a historical preservation site.

Next door is the far larger new Starbase 811.

Surrounding them both are a constellation of perimeter and wormhole defense satellites and transportation buoys.

The Ninth Fleet is based out of the Bajoran Sector, given its proximity to the wormhole, Cardassia, Tzenketh, Miradorn, Ferenginar, and others.

Martok — chancellor of the Klingon Empire. He was nearly assassinated for not conquering the Romulans in their weakened state, but he was very popular after a rare 20 years of rule and prosperity. Still, he did conquer one of the Romulan fracture states along the most highly contested border. The Empire is closer than ever to partial dissolution and multilateral Federation membership. (Really, I’d see him assassinated by now, but I wanted to keep the character in play.)
Garak — begrudged castellan of the Cardassian Third Republic. He’s not a politician, and he has been miserable in the position, but his role in history hoisted the office upon him and united a people who would have fractured without him. A reformer with an Order background, he was popular and effective, especially at curtailing new traditionalist ascendancies. Still, now the terrain has changed and Cardassia is in new territory. He’s being challenged by younger further reformers and it’s unclear whether they dispel a more hopeful future or a collapse of progress made so far. His chief rival is...candidate Anabra Ocettia Cardassia.
Rom — nearly assassinated (by Ferengi and wealthy aliens alike) after pushing too quickly for equitable reforms within the politically neutral and economically amoral Alliance, Rom, Leeta, and four of their six children escaped to exile on Mathenite Prime, awaiting opportunity to return to power.
Quark — chairman and CEO of Quark’s, Inc., he’s based out of his own moon (itself a profitable resort site) with franchise bars on dozens of worlds, including Free Cloud. As traditionalist brother of the former Grand Nagus,
Bashir —
O’Brien —
Dax —
Worf —
Kira —
Sisko —

My own take:

SISKO: Retired from Starfleet and the Emissary*, living on Bajor with his family as a Federation ambassador
KIRA: The current Kai on Bajor
EZRI DAX: Captain of Deep Space Nine
WORF: Captain of the Enterprise-E
BASHIR: Head of Starfleet Medical (Earth)
O'BRIEN: Retired, living on Earth with his family
ODO: Leader of a more benevolent Dominion
QUARK: Owner & CEO of the very prosperous Quark's Franchise
ROM & LEETA: Grand Nagus & Wife, Ferengi Alliance
NOG: Engineering Instructor, Starfleet Academy
GARAK: Supreme Chancellor, Cardassian Union

STATION DEEP SPACE NINE: It still retains its basic shape, but it's now more Federation than Cardassian in appearance after several major upgrades since Bajor's admission into the Federation. The interior of the station is also more atypical of a Federation starbase. The Bajoran Militia has since been replaced by mostly Bajoran Starfleet personnel.

USS DEFIANT, NX-74205: One of the newer Inquiry-class starships, this is actually the third Defiant to bear the same experimental hull registry as the first two assigned to DS9. It is now a unique Starfleet tradition.

*A lot of stuff happened over the last nearly 25 years

Miles O' Brien - retired Head of Starfleet Corps of Engineers

Miles O'Brien 'Smiley' (Mirror Universe) - constitutional emperor of the Terran Commonwealth

Nog - Starfleet Admiral, former Captain of the USS Defiant A

Rom - Retired Grand Nagus

Quark - Owner of multi-planetary corporation

Jake Sisko - Ex-journalist, prize winning novelist and short story writer

Garak - Emperor of the Cardassian Union

So everybody wins eh? Not very realistic is it?

B. Sisko - Still classed as MIA
Kira - Starfleet Admiral and Commander of Fleet Operations for the Bajor Sector, based on DS9
Worf - Federation Ambassador to the Klingon Empire
Bashir - Head of Xenobiology, Starfleet Medical
Dax - Head of the Symbiosis Commission, Trill
M. O'Brien - Senior Advisor to the Starfleet Corps of Engineers
Odo - With the Great Link
Quark - Now CEO of a franchise that spans twelve systems, bought his own moon
J. Sisko - Reporter for the Federation News Service and novelist

Yates - Head of the Federation Cargo Administration for the Bajor Sector, based on Bajor
Sisko-Yates - Daughter, entered Starfleet, currently serving onboard the U.S.S. Andromeda
K. O'Brien - Head of Botanical Sciences, Cambridge University
M. O'Brien - Entered Starfleet, currently serving onboard the U.S.S. Damar
Y. O'Brien - Became a terraformer
Ross - Retired from Starfleet, became a diplomat, currently Federation Ambassador to the Romulan Empire
Rom - Grand Nagus of a radically different Ferengi Alliance
Leeta - Married to Rom and leading on many social programmes on Ferenginar
Nog - Captain of Deep Space 9
Brunt - Attempted to lead a coup against Rom, failed, current whereabouts unknown
Garak - Still just plain and simple

So everybody wins eh? Not very realistic is it?

Most everyone else has most if not everyone winning too. I would also point out that just because they win in the end doesn't mean they don't take significant losses. For instance, I never mentioned Benjamin and Kassidy's child. He/she could have died or have an incurable disability.

Miles O'Brien has finally stopped suffering and has watched his daughter grow up, maybe not to a starfleet officer but a up and coming artist, and his son at Earth Spacedock as a rising engineer.

Or Molly is a rising Starfleet engineer while Yoshi is a botonist.

Alternate timeline Molly managed to survive totally alone as a child and keep herself alive and healthy. That indicates remarkable problem solving ability.

In my head canon

Sisko=Has returned and is retired and living on Bajor

Kassidy=Also retired from ship duty. Works for the Bajoran government. FIrst non-Bajoran other than Odo to basically get a job like this. Which will happen more often now that Bajor is in the Federation.

SIsko' dad has passed away.

Jake=Lives on earth on New Orleans and is married with child

Sisko's sister runs Sisko's now in New Orleans.

Kira=Federation ambassador to Cardissia as it is trying to join the Federation.

O'Brien=Still teaching at the Academy. He and Keiko had another kid/

Keiko=Assigned to the new continent on earth and is trying to create plant life on it.

Molly=Lt on a Federation Starship. Engineer

Kirayoshi=In college. Pariss squares athlete

Do the rest later. My computer is about to die on me.

I'm mostly happy to just leave the story where the TV show ended, but if I was to think of where they are by the time of Picard:

Bajor: Has joined the Federation.

Sisko: Has made an earnest effort to return to Kassidy but both of them had to realize and accept that a being who experiences linear time and one that experiences it in a non-linear way don't quite fit together and Ben had to return to the Prophets.

Kassidy: Living a quiet life on Bajor. She also raised her and Sisko's child there, maybe she re-married after her final seperation from Sisko?

Jake: Married a Bajoran woman. Working as a journalist. He and his wife had a kid or two.

Kira: Works as Federation liaison to Cardassia. There she fell in love and married a Cardassian civilian who was in the resistance against both the Dominion and Cardassia's military government. They had a bunch of kids, one of which is named after Ziyal.

Odo: Still with the link. However his ideas about individuality and the Dominion War in general eventually caused discord among the Great Link which eventually lead to a Dominion Civil War.

Bashir: Spent the rest of his life trying to cure the Blight, even eventually relocating to that planet. There violence broke out with people born just before the vaccine was administered targeting those that were already born without the Blight. Eventually Julian himself was targeted and murdered by them, with the cure left unfinished.

The O'Briens: Miles is still a teacher. Keiko is cultivating an extensive exhibit of alien plants on Earth. Molly and Kirayoshi both chose careers outside Starfleet.

Rom and Leeta: Rom is continuing overseeing the transformation of Ferengi society into a less cutthroat one. Leeta is doing a lot of charity work with the poor people of the Ferengi Alliance, which makes her beloved among them.

Quark: Is some sort of long-suffering minister in Rom's government who works day and night to keep him from being lynched.

Nog: Definitely a star-ship captain by now.

Ezri: Also a starship captain.

Garak: Probably still doing something shady, working behind the scenes....uh I mean, still working as a tailor.

That's a pretty dark end for Bashir! How about: Bashir is now doing medical research on Earth and is wowing the recreational silverhaired tennis league.

Sisko: There have been dozens of "Emissary sightings," all of which the Bajorans connect to the performance of miracles, but none of which have been confirmed.

Kira: After serving as the CO of DS9, Kira refused to become part of Starfleet when Bajor finally joined the Federation. She became an historian of the Cardassian imperialism, taught briefly at McGill on Earth, before retiring to Orkney.

O'Brien taught at the Academy for only two years before becoming the Master Chief Petty Officer of Starfleet. He advised the Federation on the post-war integration of Jem'hadar into civilian life in the Gamma Quadrant.

Bashir and Dax married. Ezri ascended to the captaincy, then the admiralty, serving with disctinction in the Second Tzenkethi War. Bashir remained in medicine, but left Starfleet. Because of his distrust of Section 31, he began a government watchdog group. He was given a temporary appointment as Earth's representative on the Federation Council. The next Dax host was Srellon, an actor, who thought humans were digusting and wanted nothing to do with Julian, in spite of Julian's wishes.

Odo started a lounge act on the Founder's Homeworld. He did Vic's entire set.

After being the Ambassador to Qonos, then serving on the Enterprise, then back to Qonos, then back to the Enterprise, people realized that Worf had problems. He eventually settled on Vulcan, where he became a reknowned sehlat wrestler.

Jake published many novels, but was particularly famous for a multi-volume retelling of the Huckelberry Finn set on Ferenginar. He married and had a daughter, but that came to an end when his affair with Kira came to light.

Nog lived and died a soldier. He directed the creation of a separate Federation Marine force, serving as the first commandant of Marine Academy on Andor. He married as Bajoran, having a daughter who would marry Jake's. He died leading an assault on Borg who had invaded Romulan colonies. He was not assimilated. His body lied in state in Paris.

Garak gave up espionage and politics. He concetrated on fashion, taking over the House of Givenchy in his late years.
