Maybe it was one of the History Channel's Star Wars programs, because I know he's spoken on-camera about how he views Star Wars in general and how he felt upon seeing the first SW film for the first time in 1977, which directly informed how he approached TFA and the choices he made for it.

Per IMDB, the Star Wars-related docs Abrams has appeared in since 2015:

Star Wars: Greatest Moments (TV)
Star Wars Celebration 2015 (shorts)
Star Wars Launchbay: Meet the Makers (short)
60 Minutes - The New Force Behind Star Wars (TV)
Star Wars: The Force Awakens World Premiere Red Carpet (TV)
Star Wars: Evolution of the Lightsaber Duel (Blu-Ray Feature)
Secrets of The Force Awakens: A Cinematic Journey (Blu-Ray Feature)
The Force Awakens: Inside the Armory (Blu-Ray Feature)
The Force Awakens: Force for Change (Blu-Ray Feature)

I like The Last Jedi quite a bit, but every time I see it, I still can't shake the feeling that it works as a series of interconnected scenes - many of them deeply meaningful, but not entirely satisfying as a whole film.

I think The Last Jedi wil work better when Episode IX is out. We don't really realize how much is taken for granted regarding ESB because of information gathered in ROTJ.

Good point. ESB got its share of negativity upon its release. But considered as the middle act of a three-part story, it has come to be highly regarded over the years.

Rian Johnson is the cancer.
And make no mistake. He is spreading and he is malignant.
Oh, for the love of god, shut up with your vindictiveness and entitlement. Rian Johnson didn't kick your goddamn puppy, he made a movie you didn't like. He doesn't owe you anything, and your rhetoric is juvenile and gives fans a bad name. I didn't care for TLJ, but listening to your endless petty and hateful whining about Johnson makes me want him to direct Episode IX just for the pure schadenfreude.

Perhaps I just take ESB for granted, but I thought there were more interesting directorial decisions made in TLJ than there were in ESB, so yes, at least as far as Star Wars movies go.

I want him to direct XI because he's the most talented fimmaker, on a pure technical level, that the franchise has ever had. Beats the pants off JJ at any rate.

Sure, but who'll direct Episode X? (Sorry, roman numeral joke. :p)

To be honest I genuinely think you need to get a little healthy perspective on this stuff

Agreed. I am perfectly okay with people not liking something I do. But when it comes to comparing a person to a cancer? Just because they made something you didn't like? Yeah, there is something not quite right there.

Okay. Rumor has it that Disney is attempting a very risky procedure to remove the anthology series. That could be considered healthy I guess.

If it's of any small comfort, Star Wars went into a vegetative state somewhere between "General Hugs" and the Lightsaber over the shoulder "fuck you" scene, and is merely on life support and no longer feeling any pain.
