The Final Frontier: Not So Bad!

Oh, I like the campfire scene. Just hate the singing and the really bad attempt at playing "drunk". Singing is the hardest thing do to well with ANY established characters. Almost always cringe-inducing. And Shatner and Kelley just didn't do "drunk" very well. Their weakest acting in all of Trek to that point.

And wasn't it De Kelley himself who didn't like the whole McCoy/father backstory? I seem to remember he almost didn't do the movie because of it.

I did like that one speech that Kirk gave, "Damn it, Bones, you're a doctor, you know that pain and guilt can't be taken away with the wave of a magic wand. They're the things that we carry with us and make us who we are. If we lose them we lose ourselves. I don't want my pain taken away, I NEED my pain!"

That was a very intelligent, moving moment in an otherwise sloppy movie. And I will give it credit for being better than GEN, the most surprisingly boring of all 10 films.

The campfire scene was done better in the novelization. Sulu's, Nyota's, and Pavel's mind meld with Sybok were absent form the movie (the novelization includes Sulu's). Why!?

Deforrest Kelley didn't like the McCoy/David (his father) scene!?

McCoy is finally given more background after all those years- Joanna (his daughter) was going to appear on TOS. Instead, that episode became...:gag: "Way to Eden".

Then we get that "Dreams of the Raven" garbage.

:insert Star Trek V here:

Later we did get "Shadows on the Sun".

I can't believe Kelley had a problem with Star Trek V's scene. :wtf:

Well I've always wondered who cut Sybock's hair and when did they have the time to do it? :vulcan:

I just read this very recently, but I can't remember where (actually, I think it was in the "Roddenberry's favorite movie" thread). It said that Kelley wasn't comfortable with the scene at first, but he did it, and he ended up being very happy with it and seeing the value of it.

I finally broke down and got the DVD and watched it last night after a ten-year hiatus. It's still not good, but there are things to like in it. I enjoyed it at the time, and still enjoy, the relationships of the Big Three, and there are some good moments for the other characters.

But still too many cringeworthy elements, and not enough plot for even an hour of television, let alone a big movie. The klingons feel totally tacked on, though Klaa has such a great look to him, I forgive it. McCoy has a great scene with the memories of his dad, but the Spock/Sybok thing feels tacked on as well. (though I have to say, I'm not bothered so much that we never heard of Sybok before: I have a half brother who I haven't seen for 20 years, and whom many friends don't even know about, so it doesn't seem so much of a stretch that way).

There's a good movie in here, but the God thing is so tired by the time it comes round again. Like the first movie, our heroes don't get much to do when they are dragged somewhere.

Still it was good seeing it after a long pause, and the dvd features were neat. I liked the deleted scenes (well most of them).
