The Face Of The Franchise

The McQuarrie design? I thought that was preTMP not TOS.

Very Warsy.
Some interesting preTOS designs here
It was supposedly going to be the refit USS Enterprise for the Paramount Network TV series Star Trek Phase II.

The plans for said Network were ultimately abandoned, and all the stuff done for Star Trek Phase Ii continued to be reworked and refined, and ultimately became what we know as Star Trek The Motion Picture.

No, that design was never going to be used for the TV revival of Star Trek.

The Ken Adams design (elaborated upon in some images by Ralph McQuarrie) was done for the film referred to as "Planet of Titans." It was in development at Paramount in the mid-1970s as a feature film to revive Star Trek.

Ken Adams' early sketch of the ship for Planet of Titans:

A McQuarrie rendering of the design, with variations:

A study model of the ship (which later was used in the Wolf 359 "graveyard" shots of BOBW II:

When the project was shelved in favor of Star Trek (Phase) II (the "Phase" was dropped early in development, but probably persists as a reference now to avoid confusion with the Montalban movie), Matt Jefferies returned as a consultant to redesign the Enterprise. The ship that would have been used (and was largely built) for that TV series is transitional in design between the TOS and TMP versions of the Enterprise. It doesn't resemble or borrow from the Adams triangle-hull design.

I agree that the Discovery is kind of ugly.... but I also kind of grew to love it for its ugliness. Ugly starships have their charms too. :bolian:
