The Down Under Lounge

So another five day lockdown - and pretty much some people are complaining about it. It's better to have a lockdown than let this virus spread.

Does that mean no-one is going to work?

the wife wanted some Australian Open souvenirs for her birthday and the order has processed (even got an Auspost tracking number) but waiting to it to actually ship.

Still got time (birthday isn't until March 1st) but still would be nice to have it in transit).

^ Only essential workers. Several businesses have to shut, while others have to run from home if they can. Things like supermarkets, chemists and such are still open. But places like cinemas and gyms are closed.

Well in that case come ye bastards where's me package :)

Okay okay.

according to the AusPost website it's 15 - 25 days for standard package.

if it's an economy package I'm screwed because they say air is suspended and ship is 2 -3 months.

They don't actually say what type of shipping beyond me pay $50 for international shipping (incidentally postage from Australia to Canada is cheaper than the reverse).

I don’t think Facebook are in the wrong.

Usually when I a link to a Murdoch newspaper on Facebook I cannot not read the article because I am not a subscriber to the newspaper. It seems to me these newspapers want to be paid twice - once by their subscribers and again by Facebook. Just imagine if Trekbbs had to pay every time someone links to a site here.

Facebook has already apologise that some non-news site such as the Bureau of Meteorology and government health sites where caught up in the ban and such sites are being restored to the platform.

True - after thinking about it a little. A lot of blame goes to this current government and Murdoch. The whole thing is a mess and could have been handled much better. The ones who suffer from this - us Australians.

I'm not sure it's that big a deal. Those who care enough have other options; the rest of us aren't fussed anyway. It's good that my newsfeed has been cleared of that MSM propaganda.

When media watch covered the issue last week, they had one clip where it was argued that this was more about protectionism for the Australian media owners that anything.

Now given that those media owners are so in bed with the lnp there's probably a good case to be made for that argument.

It looks like that The Chaser has not been banned from Facebook and have decided that they should post some real news once in a while not just satire.

I posted this in TNZ, but thought I'd add it here for wider views.

Life in Australia at the moment.

1. A second woman has come forward saying she was raped by a (the same) staffer for the conservative party, currently in Govt, last year. The first victim was interviewed about it in the room the incident happened, which was two years ago, but she asked for privacy and didn't lodge a complaint with police at the time., The Parliamentary police investigated it but didn't release findings. The Fed Minister who supervised the staffer wrote a letter of recommendation for him to take a state govt position in Sydney.

The Prime Minister is shocked, shocked, he says! He is Godawful at his job, only appearing for photo ops, gagging Opposition questions in Parliament, and letting his staff run amok with levels of corruption that would make the Trump Administration blush. Several people are beginning to wonder if three's a way to force an early election, to dump this useless mob. BUT! Rupert is right behind them, and has been for years, decades. And they have let Rupert so gerrymander the news, and buy up so much, that he gets them in every time. They should not have won the last election. A former PM (Kevin Rudd) is pushing hard for media reform, and gather other half a million signatures (including mine) for an investigation into it, which has started but, because the Govt sets the terms, it's toothless. But we try.

2. And speaking of Govt and media, contretemps over media corporations and the internet. Fox and their fellow travellers want to be paid for their news providers. Google and FB don't want to pay for it. Fox/NewsCorp signed an agreement. FB did not, and now news feeds didn't appear on pages. It's kinda backfired in that people are noticing their pages are free of crap, and don't mind. Interesting side effect: I was at my Saturday morning coffee shop, and there was a rack where the newspapers usually are but it was empty, I asked why, and the barista said the sit-downs had them all. So print is making a comeback. And a warning to Canada, they're going to try this stunt there next. I don't know what to tell you, it hasn't been running here long enough. Trapped between Rupert, the Zuck, and our shifty, shitty PM, is proving to be pretty ordinary.
