I posted this in TNZ, but thought I'd add it here for wider views.
Life in Australia at the moment.
1. A second woman has come forward saying she was raped by a (the same) staffer for the conservative party, currently in Govt, last year. The first victim was interviewed about it in the room the incident happened, which was two years ago, but she asked for privacy and didn't lodge a complaint with police at the time., The Parliamentary police investigated it but didn't release findings. The Fed Minister who supervised the staffer wrote a letter of recommendation for him to take a state govt position in Sydney.
The Prime Minister is shocked, shocked, he says! He is Godawful at his job, only appearing for photo ops, gagging Opposition questions in Parliament, and letting his staff run amok with levels of corruption that would make the Trump Administration blush. Several people are beginning to wonder if three's a way to force an early election, to dump this useless mob. BUT! Rupert is right behind them, and has been for years, decades. And they have let Rupert so gerrymander the news, and buy up so much, that he gets them in every time. They should not have won the last election. A former PM (Kevin Rudd) is pushing hard for media reform, and gather other half a million signatures (including mine) for an investigation into it, which has started but, because the Govt sets the terms, it's toothless. But we try.
2. And speaking of Govt and media, contretemps over media corporations and the internet. Fox and their fellow travellers want to be paid for their news providers. Google and FB don't want to pay for it. Fox/NewsCorp signed an agreement. FB did not, and now news feeds didn't appear on pages. It's kinda backfired in that people are noticing their pages are free of crap, and don't mind. Interesting side effect: I was at my Saturday morning coffee shop, and there was a rack where the newspapers usually are but it was empty, I asked why, and the barista said the sit-downs had them all. So print is making a comeback. And a warning to Canada, they're going to try this stunt there next. I don't know what to tell you, it hasn't been running here long enough. Trapped between Rupert, the Zuck, and our shifty, shitty PM, is proving to be pretty ordinary.
