The Down Under Lounge

He's a Christian super hero now. And before someone says not all Christians I'll say ALL the Christians I know which come from a variety of churches and who, even if they are "okay" about gay people believe this is about religious freedom.

He won't back down because he's a star.

Same ... I know a handful of Christians who have and support LGBT people yet they still think this is some kind of freedom issue despite the things they do support physically and financially.

Well speaking for myself as a Christian I don't think its got anything to do with religious freedom. I think it's about religious privilege. The people who are trying to make this about free speech want to be able to say what they like in the name of religious freedom with no consequences, while at the same time reserving the right to discriminate against gay people in religious schools and employment. As a Christian, nothing has been said or done that prevents me practising my religion so there's no loss of religious freedom.

That's about it and if you ask them that directly you are persecuting them.

hope the NRL takes him to the cleaners.

Quite sure that the NRL wants nothing to do with ... as does the AFL. I think most people are on the side of Rugby Australia.

I'm stick of him and his supporters. I wish he would go away. Can't wait for the court case and see him lose. I'm thinking about what do with a relative that is so pro-Folau it's rather sad. Ignoring him online is the best thing.

I've just taken a break from social media due to a dispute with my brother on the subject of Folau. He doesn't support Folou's comments but sees the issue as a matter of free speech and doesn't believe he should have been fired for it. I just wish the whole thing would go away.

Courts are very fickle things. He might win his case.
I'm not 100% sure which way I'd like the case to go. If he loses, does it open the door for religious organisations to contractually require staff to not post things online in favour of LGBTI+ rights? If he wins, does that mean people can say whatever they like online without fear of consequence? I'm not clear how this ends. Although an out of court settlement that doesn't actually resolve anything isn't out of the question either.

Eh...... Does anyone actually care about the Logies?

It's more a public popularity contest isn't it?

The Most Popular categories are. The Most Outstanding are industry-voted, giving the less-watched quality shows a chance. They are more interesting than Most Popular.

Gather a common description of the logies is a c-grade celebration of b-grade talent.

That's cool. Even thou I'm now living in Melbourne - I still call AFL - Aerial Ping Pong. It does annoy some Melbourne folks.

And on the Logies - couldn't care. Saw something about it this morning on FB. Not important. Watching paint dry is more interesting.

I'm the opposite. Lived in Sydney all my life and have gone from a Rugby League supporter to a passionate AFL supporter (GWS Giants Foundation member). I haven't been to a game of league in 10 years. It helps that the team I support (Eels) has been pretty pathetic over that same period. But as I've learned to understand (mostly) the rules of AFL it's gone from a game of aerial ping pong to a fascinating three dimensional game.

I had forgotten they existed until you said this.

I appologise profusely....

Ah OK so some are voted by other actors / industry, only the "most popular" is whatever trash the public vote on well that makes it better slightly I guess.

*sarcasm* Traitor */traitor*

I'm also an Eels supporter. Never been interested in the AFL. I know the Eels have some bad years, but I've stuck through them.

I still support the Eels. I just don't pay to watch them anymore (although I might go sometime to check out the new stadium). It took me a long time to get interested in AFL. Had some friends that dragged me along to a game every year and explained what was going on (in simple words for the poor League supporter) and as I started to understand the tactics I began to enjoy it more. It's much better live than on TV because its very much a 360 degree game and being able to see the whole field helps to understand what's going on. That doesn't translate well to TV unlike League and Union which have the action occurring on a much smaller area. They're all entertaining games. I just learned to enjoy AFL more.

That's cool. I haven't been to a game in over a decade. Just too much. Plus in that time I've been here and in Melbourne, so limited options to attending games. Was hoping to see them this year, but they played in Brisbane during magic round. I was happy on Saturday when they won (as I was other stuff). Last AFL game for me was about 5 years ago. Might go to one at some stage, as got family who support the Cats.

A plague on all your (sports) houses!

I'm too cynical about it all now, though one of m'boys enthuses about AFL (Swannies) and the ODI in the UK at the moment, plus a fondness for the Indian Premier League (cricket).

A good game of anything, well, played, can be quite good to watch, even NRL. But I'm against them all for 2 reasons.

One, the sheer amount of dollars involved. That kind of money should be spent on infrastructure and general support of society, and science, and arts. Not boofheads grinding into one another or whacking a ball with a stick. This is of course caused by...

Two, the sheer level of tribalism, which the money men play on. My country v your country. My state v your state. My region v your region. My city v your city. My suburb v your suburb. And in some cases, my street v your street. We get broken down into smaller and smaller units, so more and more money can be hoovered from us. And of course politicians use it too to cover a multitude of sins. Doubt it? PM: "Go Sharkies!" And Olympics.

If I could have a 2 year ban on all sport, where the money was redirected to other activities and regular people thought about other things and, indeed, the wider picture, I'd be be a happy man. I have always been a raving optimist, though. :(
