The Down Under Lounge

Stay safe teacake.

Had a bit of rain where I am in the western suburbs of Melbourne, but nothing like what felt in the eastern parts of Melbourne.

They say it is. I've been checking the radar most of the night. Might have to load it on the ipad, so I can check during the night if I wake up. Thankfully it's cooler today (and forecasted for the next 7 days)

How much rain has been received?

They were warning about rain and flooding for Adelaide on Thursday but I read the BOM data right, they only got about 10mm.

52 of 103 polling places counted (around 25% of enrolled voters), Joyce at 74%, with a swing of +7%.

(Link will update)

He usually does better in the smaller, more rural polling centres; his numbers should drop when the bigger centres come in, but doubtfully by enough.

On another foroum it was mentioned the areas where joyce is strongest - lower education, lower income, more religious.

Remind people of anywhere?

I did a comparison of a book to see how an Amazon AU price compared to prices on other sites .The book is 'Ivy and the Inky Butterfly'. Two different sellers have it at Amazon

Amazon AU (1) - $19.95 and free delivery if you order more than $49 from store

Amazon AU (2) $26.18 free delivery

Book Depository - $18.98 free delivery

Booktopia - $19.95 with $6.95 delivery per order.

Wordery - $19.95 free delivery

Fishpond - $22.57 free shipping from the US

MIghty Ape - $16.99 and $4.99 delivery per order.

So Amazon AU might not be actually all that cheap.

I had a look today for a blu-ray that I want to buy at some stage. Amazon were only a dollar cheaper than JB HIfi.

Would be interesting to see the difference with buying a laptop, to see the difference. Might do that some stage.

I do about 80% of my shopping online but I rarely use Amazon for anything except DVDs. However since I have been the NBN I tend to stream movies rather than buy them. I do use Amazon to buy an occasionally DVD or CD on behalf of a friend.

I do download eBooks and audiobooks from Amazon/Audible.

I mostly buy from Book Depository which was certainly cheaper than Amazon US. Will do a comparison next purchase though.

I also buy from Abe Books which I highly reccommend though you can wait a fair while for them. They have many obscure and out of print things, network of thousands of second hand sellers. In fact I've never had a book I couldn't find through Abe. Some of the things I've been buying lately are in print but obscure and they've been at least ten dollars less on Abe than Book Depository.

ALSO BOOK READERS! I've ordered quite a bit from the Brotherhood of St Lawrence second hand site, everything goes to charity. VERY quick postage, great search engine on site, order 3 books and postage is free, first time buyers it's also 20% off (and there's regular 10% off sales). It's hit or miss as it's a massive opshop of books but if search by keyword of something you're interested in you get all manner of things..

https://www.brotherhoodbooks.org.au

I saw an ad for it on fb and I've done 3 orders since, it's really a gem (also CHEAP very cheap..)

Book Depository is owned by Amazon. I've ordered from them occasionally. BD links to Abe Books if they don't have the book themselves.

I don't think I ever ordered a book from Amazon US or UK.

I though Book Depository was better before they were sold to Amazon. They used to be quicker at getting books out.

I buy quite often from Abe Books. My favourite Abe Seller is Better World Books.

Two other online stores that often free worldwide postage are Wordery and Kennys. I have bought books from Wordery when their prices have been cheaper than BD. i just checked, I have bought 12 books from them so far.

Kennys is an Irish store and I have not bought from them yet.

I have bought from Amazon UK. Amazon US and Amazon Canada.

I have also bought from Booktopia, Fishpond and Mighty Ape. All Australian stores though Mighty Ape is Oz/Nz.

I kind of gave up on US Amazon some years back because of postage. Then I was so satisfied with Bookdepository I didn't look back.. and yeah it used to be quicker, it sure isn't quick now. Abe books can take weeks but it's so thrilling when you find something you want. I will check out Wordery next time I'm looking!
