The Down Under Lounge

@teacock was that stable table link any good?

Tony Abbott on climate change:
“In most countries, far more people die in cold snaps than in heatwaves, so a gradual lift in global temperatures, especially if it’s accompanied by more prosperity and more capacity to adapt to change, might even be beneficial."

Jesus.

The stupidity is fucking huge in this one.

Just saw the sad news that George Young, AC/DC's original producer and half of Vanda and Young AKA Flash and The Pan ('Hey St Peter', 'Down Among The Dead Men') has passed away.

So Barnaby and 4 senators have been ruled to be ineligible to stand in parliament. Only Matt Caravan and Nick Xenophon were able to continue to serve in Parliament.

given the way the polls are going and the ongoing fuckups under turnbull he has to be a dead P.M walking.

Here's a question, gang.

You, of course, all know of, even if you haven't read, Animal Farm.

There's a new book in the UK coming out, called The Iron Bird. It's a life of Margaret Thatcher, but done like AF and set in a dilapidated zoo, with this noisy, screechy character in the middle.

So, question: if someone was to , oooo, I dunno, do something similar about, say, the last 20 years of Australian politics, what should it be based on? AF but set on an Aussie sheep station? The Iliad?

Thoughts?

This citizenship thing is ridiculous. The criteria should be simple: were you born here? (Y/N) This crap about parents born OS is making it incredibly foolish. Thoughts?

I think if you were born in Oz and have served your constituents then that should say something. Sure if someone fudges their paperwork that is one thing, but if you find out because your Mum or Dad were this or that citizen and that could make you eligible for citizenship elsewhere (but you never actually pursued it) then it strikes me as mean to un-Australian someone. I get the legality and honesty aspect, but it shouldn't be a Constitutional crisis. I wasn't born here but get called for jury duty and my allegiance is here. In every aspect I should be allowed to be full Australian but accept I'm a lesser model. Sadly no PM job for me!

It is very difficult to get rid of a citizenship. Having one because of the laws of another country that granted it to you via your parents, a citizenship you never claimed or often even knew about, being penalized for it seems petty and counter productive.

Being born here should have nothing to do with it.

I too was born OS, the main reason I declined to take up politics. But Jeeze, I'm no LNP supporter, but dragging the likes of Barnaby Joyce over the coals for being unAustralian is one of the siliest things I've ever seen. And I've seen lots!

The whole thing is a mess - but at least Malcolm Roberts is gone from federal politics and his replacement quit the one nation party a hour after being swore in. That me laugh!
