The Down Under Lounge

If any Sydney-siders are interested, Kelly's pub in Newtown now has a TNG-themed pinball machine upstairs (replacing the old Simpsons one). The drawing of Worf looks rather dodgy, but the sound effects are good.

Cheers. Next time I'm in Newtown, I will "make it so" over a cold beverage. Any other random Star Trek stuff anyone's discovered around Australia?

Just on my police matter : a breakthrough of sorts - we have a detective on the case at last. Fingers crossed its over soon.

I saw a star trek pinball machine the other day at a pub but I don't remember where. It was a pretty generic machine, not like some which are full of cool Trek things. This just had some pics of Picard slapped over space pictures.

In other news, it seems that our PM made CNN's top Asia stories. Nice to see Aus's importance in the world.

I just hung up the phone on 'that friend' after calling her a stupid woman. The phone keeps ringing but I am not picking it up.

I went to the Nerd Cave in Surry Hills a few weeks ago for a meeting for the USS Tydirium, that I'm part of. Anyways that place is awesome. We had a meeting there for the ship, and planning another sometime in May.

Good to hear.

Had lots of rain in Newcastle over the last 24 hours. Many homes and businesses have lost power, with dozens of trees falling down, due to the heavy winds. Where I am - I'm safe, but I know some other friends have been effected by the weather.

We were talking about spelling. I looked at an online ad for a business and there were several spelling mistakes and I commented how unprofessional that was. She said she didn't worry about such things because only nitpickers like me worry about spelling and that most people use netspeak now. I said that netspeak should only be used in an informal situation etc. She also said that spelling didn't matter because there was spellcheckers and aI tried to tell her why it is wrong to rely on spellcheckers.

This is a woman who doesn't use the internet or own a mobile phone, doesn't know how to use a word processor, and has been on the dole for about 16 years. She states she is a bad speller but that shouldn't matter to an employer and it was fussy people like me who made it a problem for people like her.

I have a friend who the frustration level over the phone conversation topics (that went on forever) just got too much for me. I have known her for many years, but I now say my piece and then abruptly announce I have to go and hang up when those particular topics start their endless cycleing. It has meant quite a diminishing of the friendship.

Three people are dead Due to flooding at Dungog. Houses have been swept away.

A cruise ship is unable to dock at Sydney because of swells.

Internet speak annoys me to no end. I even hate it when people send me text messages and don't bother to write the word out. With predictive texts these days and most people been on smart phones, I just don't see the need for not spelling properly any more. From people who aren't on smart phones I'm forgiving. Everyone else I silently judge.

Now, bad grammar I'm much more forgiving of. My grammar is terrible. That means that if I'm doing anything remotely formal someone else always checks it. I put way too many commas in my writing. Probably other useless stuff that doesn't belong there as well. That said, if it was bad grammar in an ad or in a job application it would automatically go in the trash. It's just laziness. Why would anyone hire someone who is lazy?

Your friend sounds like her own worse enemy MC. Always with an excuse and always someone elses fault.

How does one manage to stay on the dole for 16 years. Everyone I've known on it for long enough ends up being forced to do things like sort rags at the Salvos or rip up weeds in the bush. Actually the ones I knew ripping up weeds spent the whole time smoking dope with the work for the dole leader. They had no complaints.

Fucked if I know how she gets away with it.

The two of us became unemployed around the same time (she in 1997, me in 1998) straight away I was recognised from the beginning as being disabled enough for it to be a barrier to getting work I was expected to retrain by going back to TAFE and getting a diploma, I did volunteer work, I also volunteered for a work for the dole scheme and did a couple of unpaid traineeships and had several temporary paid jobs before finally being given the Disability Pension in 2007. In all that time she did nothing accept turn up once a fortnight to spend three hours at the job network which she complains, she doesn't even have basic computer skills.

My sisters reckon she is unemployable and Centrelink has just let her go rather than burdening any employer with her.

Wouldn't suprise me in the least.

When my sister was working in a job placement agency, she had to deal with people like your friend - just weren't interested in working and to sent them out to companies to work would just be a waste of everyone's time.

I think Australia should stop giving aid to any country that still has the death penalty.
I'd add the UK, U.S.A., European Union and New Zealand. Throttle the damn place. The thought of any of my tax dollars going to aid any barbaric regime makes me ill.

How about we cut it for any nation where the rule of law is not present.

There were untested allegations of bribery and a failure of process in the clemency review, but, who cares, let's just ignore the law and murder these men anyway.

What a shameful episode. Widodo's conduct has been utterly reprehensible throughout this, but, in particular the behaviour of the Indonesians in the last few weeks has been utterly sickening.

What was the point of sending tanks and a riot squad (that was happy to pose for gruesome selfies with the condemned) along with two unarmed prisoners?
Why deny these deeply spiritual men spiritual guidance at their moment of death?
Why force the wailing, shattered families to run the media gauntlet on the final day, when every other day they were driven to the gates to see their sons and brothers for those final precious moments?
Why was Anzac day chosen to inform the men of their deaths when our Foreign minister requested this not occur?

All of this was designed to rub Australians' noses in shit, and cause maximum grief, humiliation and despair for the families.

It was possible the most barbaric, inhuman display I've seen.

Fuck Bali. Fuck Indonesia. Fuck Widodo. I'll never set foot there again till this stain on humanity is a political footnote and the rule of law prevails there.

Barbarians. Cut all aid immediately, and keep that ambassador out of there until Indonesia acts like it is a civilised nation.

Every single person I've talked to today has been full of "did the crime, do the time, fucking losers got what they deserve" punitive bullshit.

So thanks thread for reminding me that not everyone in this country is a small minded moron. I'm glad there are people who value our official laws and morals on this matter.
