The Down Under Lounge

Judging from all the complaints on Facebook I was one of very few Australians that had no problems lodging the Census online.

Yes, I have following its progress. I will probably visit one day though I don't really have anyone to go with as my best friend doesn't really care for cats that much.Maybe I could go with my son when he has a day off.

Purely my take: I think the policy is utterly disgusting, and a LOT of people in Australia don't like it at all. There aren't that many that we couldn't bring them here.

That said, there is a great fear that if the Govt shows any leniency we'll be "overrun". And that fear isn't just about huge numbers but also refugees dying on 'our' watch, as can be seen in the Med every week, from Libya/Italy and Turkey/Greece. My anger is directed at the real criminals, the people smugglers. They aren't doing it for benevolent reasons, and they are quite prepared to let the people they are "helping" die.

We should be doing more to get people in legally faster, and prosecuting the smugglers harder. But we're under a right wing party that sees itself as 'the elite' and what they say is best. And the left wing party ties itself in knots about this. And not only is the Green party quite small, their policies tend to be a bit out there, which reduces their relevancy.

Others will be along with, probably, clearer opinions, but in general, I think average Australians would welcome them if they are willing to be part of the community. It's one of the good things about Australia. Sure there is some racism here that gets amplified by the media, but most people are OK.

I'm rambling now. Clearer opinions later. Their mileage may vary.

TL;DR - it's done in our name, and we hate that.

I wish I could go with you. I went to three different cat cafes in Korea and.. it was really amazing. I was surprised at how long we spent there, there is something very peaceful about sitting surrounded by cats. They were only about 9 dollars entry and you got a beverage with that and could stay as long as you liked. After running around looking at all of the cats eventually I would just sit and cats would come up to me and sometimes i was surrounded by cats.. it was like some cat vibe was in the whole room. I was really taken aback by how great it was.

Hey, anyone else watching this? I've been watching a short doco series on (Australian) ABCTV website called, 'You Can't Ask That'. It's a series where inappropriate questions are asked of various groups - Aboriginals, short people, terminally ill, ex-prisoners, and so on (10 all up). I can't recommend this series high enough, it's a huge insight into some of our fellow Australians and a real eye-opener.

BTW, the Muslims episode, really really interesting.

of course dutton the dishonest dickhead claims it's all overhyped.

There's also a push to thave the treatment of children on Nauru investigated as part of the royal commission in child abuse that's taking place.

But something tells me the government will fight that every step of the way.

Australia really is benig run by a mob of clueless clowns at the momment.

the bunch of idiots even tried to blame labor for the census debacle because the previous government ran a pilot project in 2011 that went with out a htich.

That the tenders/contracts/developement work and system implementation took place under the current government doesn't seem to matter.

I will have a look at it, I tend to forget Aus tv exists.

I am trying to think of the last thing I watched on anything on TV.

I did watch the Icelandic mini-series 'Trapped' on my iPad via SBS on demand.

Probably the last thing I watched as it aired was an episode of 'Silent Witness', a series I think I will give up on.

I don't have real tv, the last thing I watched as it aired was probably Enterprise the treatment of which propelled me to never giving real tv my time of day again.

ABC iView is your friend. :)

And @teacake, it's not exactly my speed, but you might like a series still on iView called Cleverman. Aboriginal SF, made by the ABC. Interesting ideas. Plus it has a chap from GoT onboard.

Weeellll, not lame, just not my cup of tea, but I do think others would like it. Not sure if you would, just curious. I will get back to it to see how it turns out. Certainly trying to be different.

I liked it all up, but the first episode or two has the whole 'everything but the kitchen sink' thing going on.

You might want to brush up on your Dreamtime stories. Otherwise it'd be like watching The Almighty Johnsons, without any knowledge of Norse mythology.
