Kirsten Schaal would be fantastic, and I agree a female host would be a great direction to go. Though I fear Kristen's comedy style is a bit too broad and touch layered in shtick. As great as her bits are there's an element of over-the-top parody in them. Which works great for those segments but as host I fear it'd be a lot like how Colbert was.
For me I didn't much like Colbert because he was doing a parody of an O'Riley-like hyper partisan news show.
The great thing about Jon Stewart for me is that he's playing it straight. He's not doing a bit, he's not playing a character, he's playing himself. So when he goes off on a rant and expresses his thoughts and opinions on something it feels that much more powerful since it's coming at you straight. There's a reason why he's been considered and called one of the most trusted men in news right now. Because he's playing it straight.
Kristen Schaal would be hilarious, I love her bits on the show, but by and large she's doing it "as a character" and not herself.
I think Jessica Williams could make for a good replacement host because her segments are pretty hilarious and she's largely doing them without doing a bit or playing a character.
But, then the question could now be why does Jon's replacement have to come from within the show? When Kilborn left, Stewart wasn't a correspondent and they went outside for a replacement. And Stewart being from the outside is why the show went from a lighter show to being a bit more of a hard-hitting commentary on politics, politicians and the media. That's what he wanted to do rather than Kilborn's lighter, more jokey, style.
So then the question now becomes what comedians out there could replace Stewart? I'll admit I'm not too "up" on my comedians that are working today and which one has humor that's a bit more with a political slant, but is there anyone out there who could replace Stewart?
Which also makes me wonder if Stewart is leaving entirely or if he's still going to stay on as an Executive Producer and keep some creative control over the show, at least for the time-being? Because anyone who replaces the show could do just what Stewart did when he started. Take the show in a different direction.
They may not want to as much hard-hitting and biting political humor, challenging the politicians out there and the many, many problems with the news media. They may want to go more with the Jokey style Kilborn started the show with, or go in a completely different direction entirely.
Hell, Stewart's pretty strongly left-leaning, what if his replacement is right-leaning and isn't so critical of Fox News and is more critical of MSNBC and Democratic politicians?
While Stewart has certainly been critical of MSNBC, CNN and of Democrats, he does take a lot more shots at Republicans and Fox News. Granted, Fox News has a pretty strong history of their political bias and distorting facts or ignoring their own previous stances to fit their current narrative, a Right-Leaning Host may not see it that way and flip the tables and call out the Liberal Media on their hypocrisy. (Which Stewart has, indeed, done from time-to-time. But, again, he tends to be more critical of Fox News and the Right.)
Ugh, the more I think about this the more nervous I get.
