Spoilers The Controversial Star Wars Opinion Thread

Is it controversial to say Luke's reaction to sensing evil in Ben is completely fine?

The fact he chose not the strike is the important part. Just like he chose not to strike at Vader in ROTJ.
That's my view as well. Luke had the same reaction as he was trained to in the face of evil, and is presented by the Jedi across various media, including by Obi-Wan (Luke's initial teacher), by Yoda (Luke's other teacher), by Qui-Gon (Luke's grandteacher*), among others.

The other side of it is Ben's response also in face of it, bringing down the whole room and the resulting destruction and continuing on the path of destruction post decision.

I completely agree. He simply panicked when he first sensed it, but then got himself under control. I think in a situation like that, that moment of panic is completely understandable.

Yeah, if Kylo hand't woken up, he probably would never had known Luke was there.

I do wonder sometimes if the moment might've drawn fewer complaints if they'd had a little montage of what Luke saw in the scene. It feels condescending to suggest the audience forgot that Kylo Ren killed Han Solo in the last movie, (seemingly) killed Princess Leia in this movie, plus all the other characters he tortured and murdered, but given all the complaints about Luke doing something he did in every movie before this one, maybe they needed to make his horror at what was to come a little more visceral.

Don’t give them an easy pass. Disney FAFO’d and now they’re finding out with their string of multimillion dollar disasters. It’s well-deserved and I’m enjoying every shriek and cry as staffer after staffer is fired. Suffer and go bankrupt.

They killed the EU to allegedly get rid of the nonsense and shenanigans only to turn around and give us…more shenanigans? :wtf:

*slow clap*

Bravo. You effing morons. “We’re gonna retcon to ensure more consistency going forward.” Uh huh. How’s that working out for you? You killed Thrawn and gave us the cardboard cutout version in Kylo Ren instead? The entire franchise post Rogue I is a mess and not worthy of fandom. You don’t get rid of George Patton to replace him with Ronald McDonald, and that’s exactly what they did.

Now, maybe they’ve done something worthy of consideration in the newer movies and tv series. I don’t know. Don’t care because I’ll never watch them. I will never watch them because by destroying the EU and all the background canon, they have reduced its depth and rendered it a shallow mud puddle, and now, when I watch the ads for them, I am stuck with the thought of what could have been getting in the way of enjoying the franchise.

Fuck the SW EU.

Never was canon and Disney didn't destroy anything if it's still sold at book stores and I can still read it.

^This is why the trend of quality is in a tailspin.

Disney: “Here’s a polished turd plated in 24K gold!”
Public: “I want all of them! ZOMG!!”
Yes. Stop buying things you think are substandard. Stop talking about them. Buy what you think is quality. Promote that.

It was canon before it wasn't. That was the whole point of decanonizing it.
Oh, please. No it wasn't. Lucas discarded it as nothing that was from him. Just people playing in the sandbox he made. Luke doesn't get married, etc.

That fans insisted it was canon and berated fans for not knowing it (geez was that painful at times. Make me feel bad for not reading a book then berate me for my lack of knowledge.) led to the "decanonizing."

They said it was.
Lucas said it wasn't.

Good enough for me at this point.

Regardless, the way fandom treated the EU actually made me resent it. It became trivia points and a measure of "true fandom" like measuring midiclorians. It was nearly insulting. That it is now lauded even further is more frustrating and makes me less interested in it.

Lucas said it wasn't.
I don't think he even used the word. It's just that his comments were interpreted that way. Meanwhile, Lucasfilm's employees said otherwise.

The "it was never canon" position ultimately does not originate from anything Lucas said, but from internet randos who always insist that the Star Wars system must be identical to the Star Trek system, because everything must be. One might think that the franchise itself should get a say.

The implication was there, and was reiterated in several articles in Star Wars Insider, not just internet randos.

So, with all due respect, no it was not canon, no I don't treat it that way, and no it's not enjoyable because fans abused it so badly as a baseball bat to prove their fan status over other fans.

Its enjoyability would seem to be a separate issue, dependent on the individual.

As we all know some of it was terrible.

You really dodged a bullet on that one.
Apparently not because now, after Ahsoka and the ST and all of that, there is the demand for the EU to be restored. Reminds of me of the demand for Disney to buy LFL and erase the PT from the canon.

Yes, that was said. People are ridiculous some times.
