JM's Top Twenty-Five, Week Ending October 16th, 2010
1 – Boise State (6-0)
They crush the teams they're supposed to crush, and handle everyone else. No one's looked better this season.
2 – Oregon (6-0)
I hope they show up to play Thursday night.
3 – Oklahoma (6-0)
Hard to believe they're actually a sleeper this year. No one seems to be talking about them.
4 – Auburn (7-0)
Their quarterback is a scoring machine.
5 – Texas Christian (7-0)
They seem to sleepwalk through most of their games' first halves, then wake up and offhandedly crush the opposition.
6 – Michigan State (7-0)
Who would have guessed that of five main contenders in the Big Ten, Sparty would be the last undefeated?
7 – Utah (6-0)
Within striking distance for a run at the national championship.
8 – Louisiana State (7-0)
A thrilling win over UF, which is now in a freefall, doesn't really mean much anymore. Then, again, it's still Florida.
9 – Alabama (5-1)
Running the table still wins them a second consecutive BCS title, in all likelihood ... but I think Auburn may have something to say about that.
10 – Stanford (5-1)
I actually think their style would stand them in good stead for SEC play.
11 – Wisconsin (6-1)
OK, OK ... I'm on board—for now. Still, I did not for a minute expect them to win, and it's got to be sweet. It also makes Michigan State look awesome.
12 – Iowa (5-1)
I'll stick with them to win the Big Ten—for now.
13 – Ohio State (6-1)
Handled the pressure of "number one" (according to those other polls) in rather disappointing fashion. As I'd said, they hadn't played anybody.
14 – Nebraska (5-1)
After their fans talked about revenge for the best part of a year, that loss has got to feel humiliating. Texas essentially ruined their season.
15 – Florida State (6-1)
The more they win, the better an idea Bowden's retirement seems.
16 – Oklahoma State (6-0)
And again, hope builds in Stillwater—only to prove stillborn later this year.
17 – Arizona (5-1)
I can't wait to see the 'Cats tangle with Stanford and Oregon.
18 – Missouri (6-0)
The Tigers beat Oklahoma and they leap into my top ten. Hell, if they give 'em a good game they probably move up.
19 – South Carolina (4-2)
Spurrier simply can't get them to play well week in and week out.
20 – Texas (4-2)
If you can't win a national championship yourself, the next best thing is to deny it to someone else.
21 – Virginia Tech (5-2)
Whoever scheduled them to play Boise State and 1-AA power James Madison only four-and-a-half days apart should be flogged, tarred, feathered and run out of town ... because now they look awesome and it's too late to make a push at a national championship.
22 – West Virginia (5-1)
It's truly frightening that a 4-3 conference record might win the Big East this year.
23 – Mississippi State (5-2)
Like I said: It is Florida.
24 – Kansas State (5-1)
Snyder is the master illusionist and motivator, because they don't yet have the talent to compete, and still they're doing it.
25 – Arkansas (4-2)
You have to wonder, though, how good they'll be once Petrino has everything in place—including, say, a defense.
Rutgers Watch: I can't figure out whether the 4-2 Scarlet Knights are terrible for having barely beaten freakin' Army, or a lot tougher and more resilient than I'd thought, having come back from 17-3 in the fourth quarter to beat an honestly very much improved Army. The upcoming game against Pitt will tell us all more.
