The College Football Thread

Even though it was a meaningless game, I sure enjoyed watching my Trojans pound the shit out of Cal today.

That's something I'll never get tired of.

:techman:

Way to lose to the lousy Texas Longhorns, Nebraska. You oughta be embarrassed. So much for a match of the unbeatens in Stillwater next week. As usual, all the attention will be on the Oklahoma Sooners. Did South Carolina really lose to Kentucky? :guffaw: What a way to nullify your shining moment of glory last week. Kentucky is such a football powerhouse as we all know.

JM's Top Twenty-Five, Week Ending October 16th, 2010

1 – Boise State (6-0)

They crush the teams they're supposed to crush, and handle everyone else. No one's looked better this season.

2 – Oregon (6-0)

I hope they show up to play Thursday night.

3 – Oklahoma (6-0)

Hard to believe they're actually a sleeper this year. No one seems to be talking about them.

4 – Auburn (7-0)

Their quarterback is a scoring machine.

5 – Texas Christian (7-0)

They seem to sleepwalk through most of their games' first halves, then wake up and offhandedly crush the opposition.

6 – Michigan State (7-0)

Who would have guessed that of five main contenders in the Big Ten, Sparty would be the last undefeated?

7 – Utah (6-0)

Within striking distance for a run at the national championship.

8 – Louisiana State (7-0)

A thrilling win over UF, which is now in a freefall, doesn't really mean much anymore. Then, again, it's still Florida.

9 – Alabama (5-1)

Running the table still wins them a second consecutive BCS title, in all likelihood ... but I think Auburn may have something to say about that.

10 – Stanford (5-1)

I actually think their style would stand them in good stead for SEC play.

11 – Wisconsin (6-1)

OK, OK ... I'm on board—for now. Still, I did not for a minute expect them to win, and it's got to be sweet. It also makes Michigan State look awesome.

12 – Iowa (5-1)

I'll stick with them to win the Big Ten—for now.

13 – Ohio State (6-1)

Handled the pressure of "number one" (according to those other polls) in rather disappointing fashion. As I'd said, they hadn't played anybody.

14 – Nebraska (5-1)

After their fans talked about revenge for the best part of a year, that loss has got to feel humiliating. Texas essentially ruined their season.

15 – Florida State (6-1)

The more they win, the better an idea Bowden's retirement seems.

16 – Oklahoma State (6-0)

And again, hope builds in Stillwater—only to prove stillborn later this year.

17 – Arizona (5-1)

I can't wait to see the 'Cats tangle with Stanford and Oregon.

18 – Missouri (6-0)

The Tigers beat Oklahoma and they leap into my top ten. Hell, if they give 'em a good game they probably move up.

19 – South Carolina (4-2)

Spurrier simply can't get them to play well week in and week out.

20 – Texas (4-2)

If you can't win a national championship yourself, the next best thing is to deny it to someone else.

21 – Virginia Tech (5-2)

Whoever scheduled them to play Boise State and 1-AA power James Madison only four-and-a-half days apart should be flogged, tarred, feathered and run out of town ... because now they look awesome and it's too late to make a push at a national championship.

22 – West Virginia (5-1)

It's truly frightening that a 4-3 conference record might win the Big East this year.

23 – Mississippi State (5-2)

Like I said: It is Florida.

24 – Kansas State (5-1)

Snyder is the master illusionist and motivator, because they don't yet have the talent to compete, and still they're doing it.

25 – Arkansas (4-2)

You have to wonder, though, how good they'll be once Petrino has everything in place—including, say, a defense.

Rutgers Watch: I can't figure out whether the 4-2 Scarlet Knights are terrible for having barely beaten freakin' Army, or a lot tougher and more resilient than I'd thought, having come back from 17-3 in the fourth quarter to beat an honestly very much improved Army. The upcoming game against Pitt will tell us all more.

Dude, give my team a little more credit than just assuming they'll crash and burn. They didn't have Kendall Hunter most of last year, and Ori Lemon was also out last year. Ori's been critical on defense. They held Tech to a mere field goal in the second half. Oh, and Mike fucking Gundy (who really is an asshole personally) was calling all the plays last year. Dana Holgerson's made a real difference. I'm not predicting a national title, but there's a middle ground between that and total crash and burn. You at least acknowledged the possibility the Tigers could beat the Sooners.

Of course Holgerson will get a higher paying offer soon enough. sigh

Don't know if the appearence of Gerard Butler at MSU this weekend made any national TV, but there is a thread on a Spartan fan forum for anyone interested:

http://www.spartantailgate.com/foru...0-gerard-butler-drunk-he-really-cool-cat.html

The short of it: Butler played King Leonidas in the movie 300, a movie from which some quotes have been taken and piped in during MSU sporting events. They've tried to get him on campus for a few years now, and locals finally convinced him when he was shooting a movie in Detroit this summer. He showed up at our midnight madness friday and lead the arena in "SPARTANS! WHAT IS YOUR PROFFESION!" before going out to the bar and hanging out with the students. Did the same thing before the game against Illinois yesterday. He hung out around the student section for most of the game refusing no pictures with a huge smile on his face the whole time. At one point, he took one of our flags and began running around waving it. At another, he was attempting to copy some of our dance teams moves. Apparently he hung out again last night. Haven't heard anyone have a single bad thing to say about the guy, real cool story (expecially considering his is Scottish and not to familar with American football)

Sorry, but ... not yet. They'll have to show me a little more than they have thus far before I'll even consider beginning to stroll towards the bandwagon. You know, even better than me, that their rep for being unable to get it done is richly deserved.

[Remember, I did credit them with some steel re: their comeback a few weeks ago.]

For what it's worth, I hope they shock the shit out of me and run the freakin' table. If it happens, though, it would shock the shit out of me.

Hey ... they're better than Rutgers. :mallory:

[Edit: On a somber note, RU defensive tackle Eric LaGrand is paralyzed below the neck, the result of a devastating collision yesterday against Army. Please keep this Scarlet Knight in your thoughts and prayers.]

No one will know for quite some time. He had emergency surgery last night to stabilize his spine and prevent any further damage, and will remain in the ICU for the foreseeable future. Right now, he's completely paralyzed from the neck down. But a traumatic injury like this isn't an easy one to recover from; no one really knows how his nervous system will react.

It's really, really sad.

Click here to send a "get well" message to LeGrand.

Kevin Everett was initially unresponsive, but after a few days, tests were showing that he had significant nerve responses in his arms, and the initial prognosis was that he would eventually regain at least partial mobility in his legs. It's a bit different with LeGrand, as all tests are indicating that the injury was so traumatic that all we can do is hope, and pray, that somehow he regains some mobility. (The Sporting News originally reported that the injury was similar to the cervical spine injury that left Christopher Reeve permanently paralyzed, but the report was pulled a few hours ago.)

Don't remind me. I was wanting Nebraska undefeated, riding high, and full of ego waiting to be deflated when they come to Stillwater next week. Now the game has lost a great deal of its potential luster and Nebraska will be all pissed off waiting for my Cowboys. Darnit.

As a matter of fact, you have to wonder whether College GameDay would have chosen Oklahoma-Missouri or Nebraska-Oklahoma State had the 'Huskers beaten UT and all four been undefeated.

Frankly, though, I'm not impressed in the least with Nebraska's anger: They were supposedly seething with fury over last year's Big 12 title game and frothing at the mouth for a last shot at Texas before skipping out to the Big Ten.

Well, we saw how that turned out: Handled with relative ease at home by a team that UCLA trounced.

What do you think, Dorian? Will the Cowboys get it done this weekend?

My Scarlet Knights are at Pittsburgh ... and I have a feeling they just might win. The Panthers don't seem to have any backbone. Then, again, often RU doesn't have any offense, so ... [shrugs]

Sometimes people get a fire in them after a tragic event. I don't even know Rutgers well, but I would say all bets are off, under the circumstances.

Man, that was scary to read about. I hope he'll be able to heal!!! I will be praying for him.

it was good to have Ohio State as number1 for 1 week! Well hope we get a good bowel game to play in ! I was hopeing they would come to phoenix this year! well i have to want for another 4 year rats!
