The College Football Thread

It would be better for UD if UVA wins, but I always root for upsets with a CAA team winning, so let's go Dukes.

Yeah, this is cool. It reminds me of Michigan and Appalachian State three years ago.

Yeah, but I don't know if Ole Miss is considered as good as VT. That's why I got reminded of Michigan (that team was ranked 5th to start the year).

Still, good so far for FBS teams.

Yeah, this definitely one-upped JSU @ Ole Miss. We got our week of fame though!

Odds are Virginia tech is ranked #25 for sympathy.

They'll probably try and say it's a fluke. IIRC, it took a couple more weeks of losing before Michigan dropped off the rankings back then.

Buckeyes defuse Hurricanes: 36-24

Ohio St played sloppy and still was clearly the better team against U of Miami today. I'm not sure if it's the overall youth on defense (especially the secondary), or if there is something else in the coaching. But the special teams for the second week in a row turns in a lackluster and imho sub-par performance. Sure the PK was 5 of 6, but there were two Miami returns for TD's. The poor tackling didn't help, either.

Still, Pryor was a stud with excellent, mature play. That shovel pass was a thing of beauty!

ETA: Though I did not get to see the ND/Mich game, it would seem that Denard Robinson is the real deal and perhaps Rich Rod's new QB for his spread offense. Of course, eventually someone else is going to have to run, once they play a team with a decent defense.. And they still have a very suspect defense, but Robinson is something to be concerned about.

South Dakota 41 Minnesota 38. That's the 4th FCS school to beat an FBS team in two weeks. Not a huge matchup... but still.

My Montana State Bobcats should have made it #5, but they lost to Wash. St. late.

No classic in Tuscaloosa. Alabama's defense, especially the secondary, is a work-in-progress. With the return of Dareus from his suspension and a healthy Upshaw, they should improve. There were flashes from Penn State's Bolden and while they made some impressive plays, they couldn't put together enough to mount a serious threat. Next year's game in Happy Valley should be a closer match with the Penn State offense having a season's experience under their belts and Bama moving to redshirt sophomore A.J. McCarron at the helm. Looking forward to it.

Good news for USC. We could use some.

Still getting used to the Era of Lowered Expectations. Watching USC engage in a public self-soiling last night was quite painful. They are very lucky they didn't lose to Virginia.

Something that the sports folks are pointing out..... JMU's upset of Va Tech really hurts Boise St. Their win over Va Tech was supposed to be their big out-of-conference win to help them pursue a national title game berth. The Hokies' loss puts a nice dent in Boise's claim.

Well, crap. Seems that all the ranked ACC teams got their asses handed to them this weekend. At least Georgia lost too.

Tennessee will be crying tonight.

Perhaps not for the expected reasons though. That first half was a thing of beauty, but good god Oregon is battle-tested. And fast.

Still, Dooley's building a good thing here in Knoxville with all these young players. A little experience so they don't fall apart (and made idiotic mistakes) will go a long way. Bring on the Gators.

I'll tell you ... Penn State had better not take Temple lightly next weekend. They aren't foolin' around anymore, and just handled a fairly solid UConn team.

Don't get me wrong: I'm not saying they're in PSU's league. But if the Lions welcome them to Happy Valley thinking TU's just gonna bend over and take it, the extremely well-coached and surprisingly talented Owls could make a real game of it.

Oh, and ... hi, guys. How's it goin'? :)

Temple played better last year than in the past, but they're still a low-level I-A team. Obviously, any team can lose if they don't take their opponent seriously, that should just go without saying.

Air Force gave Oklahoma all they wanted today and almost pulled off the big upset. I love when the service academies play the big schools well.

Hell of a game between Wisconsin and Arizona State this afternoon. I've been a longtime critic of Wisconsin's high poll rankings, given the fact that the school frequently makes a ridiculously soft schedule for itself, and today's game exhibited some pretty big holes in the Badgers. (Special teams, notably, were absolutely horrific, outside of the blocked PAT.)

But in a little while, I get to watch Iowa beat up on Arizona. :)
