The College Football Thread

You wanna talk tough sells? How about the coming football schedule for the Vols?

Sept. 4 Tennessee-Martin
Sept. 11 Oregon
Sept. 18 Florida
Sept. 25 UAB
Oct. 2 at LSU
Oct. 9 at Georgia
Oct. 23 Alabama
Oct. 30 at South Carolina
Nov. 6 at Memphis
Nov. 13 Mississippi
Nov. 20 at Vanderbilt
Nov. 27 Kentucky

^We should be able to handle our in-state opponents... including our first FCS/Division I-AA opponent since 1983 in the form of Tennessee-Martin... and also UAB & most likely continue the streak against Kentucky. Other than that, the Vols' schedule looks absolutely brutal! Maybe we'll get seven wins like last year.... MAYBE.... In any case, it's gonna be a long and dangerous uphill climb!

UAB is a guaranteed win. They might as well be an FCS team.

David Sills, a 13-year-old middle school QB from Delaware, has given a verbal commitment to USC.

Here's one of the many ESPN stories.

Yeah, I was tempted to post this as its own thread (not every day Delaware news is noteworthy nationally). I know nothing about him except that he went to Red Lion. I'm not quite sure what to think yet. Clearly, the kid is talented, but the emphasis there should be kid. Who knows what high school even has to bring yet.

I like to talk about the possible upheavals in the NCAA conference landscape in the next 2 years.

As some of you might know the Big Ten has been looking to expand their conference. As of right now their TV revenue is already the biggest in the NCAA. Other conferences have deals with media outlets such as ESPN or CBS. The Big Ten however runs their own cable TV channel along with their deals with networks like ABC. For every household who receive the BTN (Big Ten Network) as part of its standard cable package the Big Ten receives $0.8 per month. Right now the BTN's reach is already over 25 million households but its mostly concentrated in the great Lakes area. Big Ten commissioner Delany has been talking about expanding to new TV markets especially ones in the Sun Belt area.

Major Current Developments
Nebraska might join the Big Ten as soon as this Friday.

My Comments

If Big Ten have gotten Notre Dame on-board then my feelings is that they would stop their expansion plan right there. The NCAA conferences would remain unchanged. However now that it appears Notre Dame has snubbed the Big Ten invitation then it's possible there will be dramatic conference realignment in the next few years.

Possibilities for dramatic realignment

1. Pac-16?

The Big 12 hasn't been a happy family lately with Nebraska feeling left out in what some Cornhuskers deride as the "Greater Texas conference". Texas and their posse who controls the Big 12 has given Nebraska and Missouri this ultimatum i.e. either stay or we'll leave for the Pac-10. This by itself is pretty hilarious since Texas is preparing toplace all the blame on Nebraska if the conference falls into pieces even though they have been negotiating with the Pac-10 to form a super-conference i.e. the Pac-16 if Nebraska does finally bail. The Pac-16 will be all the current Pac-10 teams plus Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Baylor or Colorado. The issue with Baylor or Colorado is still rather controversial as Colorado also wants to join the Pac-10 however the Texas Legislature has threaten to cut off state funding to UT Austin if they don't take A&M, Baylor and Tech with them to the Pac-10. Now Pac-10 only really want Oklahoma and Texas since they are also in the process of creating their own cable TV network and those two schools will be enough to bring in the Texas & Oklahoma TV markets and all the prestige/money. I think one tOSU fans put it the best: Texas is like that hot blonde that you want to marry but she has 3 kids. :) My opinion on this is that if Pac-16 is indeed formed then Colorado will be the school that would be left out.

2. Big Ten to become the Big-16?

Given that Notre Dame has decided to stay independent and Nebraska bailing out on the Big 12 means the formation of Pac-16. The Big Ten will not stop at just 12 teams since they'll want to keep up with the Pac-16 Missouri is already on-board and couldn't be more eager to take a bite out of the sumptuous BTN pie. Missouri's attraction for the Big Ten is the potential capture the Kansas City/St. Louis TV markets. With Missouri and Nebraska added the Big Ten I think will look to the east to add 3 more teams. This means that Big Ten will be poaching the ACC and Big East conferences for teams to add. Rutgers is a possibility even though their sports program is pathetic and no one in the NYC watch college sports. However the NYC TV market is huge and the setup of BTN doesn't strictly require viewership to bring in revenue. It just need the local cable operators to carry the channel. The likes of Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Maryland, Georgia Tech all have been also been tossed around as potential candidates. Note that these schools are all AAU schools. The Big Ten conference is known for only having AAU schools so any school they invite would most likely have to be in the AAU (Nebraska and Missouri are). The AAU is an association of 61 US universities and 2 Canadian Universities who are admitted based on their excellence in graduate school education and research. Membership is by invitation only and if you look through the members list on the AAU site it include all the elite US private universities i.e. the Ivies, Stanford, Duke, Emory, Vanderbilt, Cal Tech, MIT, plus the best public Universities i.e. Michigan, UC. Berkeley, UCLA, UNC Chapel Hill, Georgia Tech, etc. I am proud to say that my school Georgia Tech was finally invited to the AAU back in April of this year (the first school to be invited in a decade). I think it was long due btw. So why do I mention this little tidbit. Well because it's possible that Georgia Tech might get an invite from the Big Ten now that we are finally AAU. If all the hells break loose in the ACC I really hope Georgia Tech gets an invite from Big Ten. Why do I think that ACC might be going down? Well it all has to do with the almighty SEC.

3. Expansion of SEC

Of course with these developments we can't expect the so called best college football conference in the nation to stand by and be idle. Rumor has it that SEC Commissioner Mike Slive already has a contingent plan in place if the realignment is happening. They are going to poach some ACC teams including the likes of FSU, Miami, Georgia Tech and possibly either Louisville or Clemson. For me Georgia Tech going back to the SEC just leaves a bad taste in my mouth plus it doesn't make any sense for the SEC. The SEC already has a sizable portion of the TV market in Georgia with UGA. Academically Georgia Tech doesn't fit in the SEC and neither does Vanderbilt but that is another story. Also GT left the SEC back in the 60s because of terrible treatment from the conference. Anyhow with the SEC poaching the ACC it's likely that the ACC will be weakened significantly and I definitely don't want GT to stay in a neutered ACC.

Options for Georgia Tech

Ranked according to my own preference.

1: ACC remains intact (SEC doesn't expand and B10 only gets some Big East teams). GT doesn't go anywhere. Perfect!

2: ACC gets watered down (due to teams leaving for both the SEC and B10). GT joins the Big Ten. Keeping some of the old rivalries like Clemson, Auburn and of course UGA as out of conference games. Making some new rivalries. I would love to see GT playing against Penn State in Happy valley. There is also bonus of tOSU stealing UGA recruits. :D

3: ACC gets watered down. GT joins SEC. Ugh! We are going to become slightly better than the Vanderbilt/Kentucky of the conference.

4: ACC gets watered down. GT stays put. Our football program is fucked..

I don't know about you guys but all these potential changes makes it a very exciting off-season in college football for me. Can you imagine that in 5 years the Big 12 could be completely gone along with the Big East and ACC (the remnants of those 2 might merge to form a super basketball conference)? When the dust finally settles there could be only three super-conferences with 16 teams each.

More noise that Nebraska is leaving for the Big Ten..

There is no reason at all for the SEC to go after teams such as Georgia Tech, Clemson, Louisville, FSU or Miami, they bring nothing to the SEC in TV markets that they don't already have, unless a Virginia, Virginia Tech or even the Kansas teams can be gotten, the SEC should sit this one out, even if the Pac 16 and Big 10 +5 bring in all those teams the SEC is still going to be ok.

Besides, both FSU and Miami were invited to the SEC in the 80's, at Florida's urging, they said no..to hell with em :D

Nebraska joining the Big Ten is mostly interesting to me because of the volleyball implications...Penn State and Nebraska (plus Texas and Stanford) consistently rank among the top four in that sport, and in 2008 PSU dropped its only two sets of the year against the Huskers.

ETA: Looks like USC was hit pretty hard. Two year ban from the postseason and loss of 20 scholarships, forfeiture of wins from 2004.

As a fellow GT Alum, Daedalus12, I echo your sentiment that I'd rather the ACC stay intact. However, if that's not an option, I'd rather see Tech go to the SEC rather than the Big Ten. I know there was some past friction (some of which was probably Tech's fault as well, or at least the then-coach), but I would much rather see Tech play mostly in the southeast region. The Big Ten would make for a lot of long road trips, and quite honestly, Tech's fans don't travel that well.

The disintegration of the Big-12 continues, as Colorado joins the PAC-10.

Pretty sure the disintegration is set in stone, as Big 12 sources say that if Nebraska bails for the Big Ten (which is basically a done deal at this point, all that's left to do is get ink on paper), the conference will simply dissolve (with everyone but Baylor, Missouri, the Kansas schools and Iowa State joining the Pac-10).

So any suggestions for the new name for the PAC-10? If the above holds true, they'll be so far from "Pacific" and "10" that they can't really ignore it.

I do understand the sentiment of keeping traditional ties and the issue of increasing travel burdens on the student fans and alums as well. A lot of Yellow Jackets would probably lean towards the SEC as well. I think the number is probably 2 to 1 in favorite of your camp.

For me being a Yankee transplant from the greater Philly area i.e. South Jersey (though I did do most of my High School education in Georgia) I feel a closer tie to the schools in the Big Ten (i.e. Penn State) than I do to the SEC schools. However it really comes down to the simple fact that I think the Big 10 is a better future for GT both in terms of research/academia and sports. The case for a better academic alliance with Big Ten is never in doubt as the Big Ten is probably the best conference academically speaking outside of the Ivy League. You are also from the Aerospace Engineering program here at Tech. Here is the ranking of the AE Program around the nation.

1 Massachusetts Inst. of Technology
2 Georgia Institute of Technology *
3 University of Michigan–Ann Arbor *
4 Stanford University (CA)
5 California Institute of Technology
6 Purdue Univ.–West Lafayette (IN)*
6 U. of Illinois–Urbana-Champaign *
8 Princeton University (NJ)
9 University of Texas–Austin *
10 Cornell University (NY)

We would join 3 other top 10 programs in that regard. This also generally holds true for other engineering programs as well. The Big Ten collectively has a lot of great engineering schools.

Being in the Big Ten will bring in a lot more TV revenue for our athletic programs. The increased TV revenues I think far exceeds than any increased travel costs for the athletes. If the BTN can saturate the Atlanta TV market then there will be even more money.

GT fans don't travel well however the Big 10 schools allot a very small amount of tickets to visitors anyways. On the flip side the Big 10 fans travel to away games even better than the SEC fans and there are also a lot of B10 country transplants in Atlanta. Our home game might sell out every time if we are in the Big 10. I was at the Orange bowl this year and I saw how many Iowa fans were in the stadium and how few GT fans were there despite being 1000 miles closer. I would sacrifice a bit of my personal traveling convenience to the games if it means a better future for the school.

If the ACC does collapse due to the realignment upheavals (not necessarily going to happen at this point). and if we are lucky enough to get an invitation from both the Big 10 and SEC then I would def. accept the former. Not sure how the board would vote though.. It the end I think they will just make a decision based on money. :)

Yeah, 2-year bowl ban and 20 scholarships: link. According to ESPN, they're going to lose wins as well. I don't know about awards, though

The hammer has fallen on USC.

Athletic program placed on four years probation.

In football, some wins in 2004-05 and all wins from 2005-06 vacated (their national title and Reggie Bush's Heisman could be revoked). No bowl game for two years.

In addition to football and men's basketball, even USC women's tennis has to vacate wins!

Damn this realignment business is getting me all worked up.. I haven't gotten any grad. school work done in the past few days..

Just when I thought it couldn't any more weirder..

Longhorns and Aggies going to the Big 10?

Sooners to the SEC?

If Notre Dame also joins the Big Ten along with this latest rumour then the 5 all-time winningest program in College football will all be in the Big Ten.

No wonder Pete Carroll skipped town.

That's got to be the most common line that no sportscaster has made on-air just yet.

Although I loved what Bobby Knight said this morning on Mike & Mike, in reference to the investigation taking 4+ years: "If this NCAA had planned the Normandy invasion, our troops would have landed in Portugal".

Florida having some snapping issues today, but starting to roll over Miami (OH). My UGA Bulldogs absolutely putting the hurt on UL-LAF at 48-7 in the third. And my personal favorite JSU Gamecocks (graduated from there) facing off against Ole Miss in a few minutes.
