The character I have always wanted to see. Voyager's first chief engineer!

Anyone else always been curious about that character like me? We saw most of the other senior officers before they were killed in the pilot but never the chief engineer and not even a name.

I just assumed they never dealt with them to minimize the feeling that so many major characters were being killed off to make space for new ones. First officer, chief engineer, pilot, the only doctor...

According to Memory Beta, his name was Honigsberg.
I always imagine that he looked like Brian Johnson of AC/DC.

For my part, I would have liked to see the original crew, even the time of a whole episode, before some of them to be killed during the Kazon's attack, for at least one time, the joy & curiosity to see Capt. Janeway in action in an environnement 100% Starfleet. And then, to see people for 1 to 2 min. then go, has always seemed incredibly unfair to said actors.

I think it would have been interesting to see more of the original crew. Would have been a good gut punch to get to know them a little bit and then have them all get killed off.

I agree. I especially liked Stadi. Here scene with Paris in the shutlecraft is pretty good and you could in theory even keep her alive on the show and not kill her. She could have been reasigned to the same room as that Rollins guy who never returned in any future shows and they didn't even kill him like the other bridge crew. He got referenced once or twice and that was it. Both could have shown up more along with Carrey and Wildeman plus Suder and Seska as the main reacurring cast.

I know they created the Hogan character who I think was basically doing the Carry role but he never made a big impact on me and the most memorable thing he did was to be eaten by a dinosaur. VOrik and Celes were good but Celes was criminally underused only being in 2 episodes.

Here's how I'd have done it.

Keep the main crew on for several episodes, with the Maquis aboard confined to quarters etc.

Gradually Janeway loses more and more crew and has no choice but to approach Chakotay to ask for his people to help them in exchange for their freedom.

    Like this scenario! :techman: ...

    1) but I'd add a mandatory requirement : the obligation for Janeway to warn Chakotay (and HIS crew) that her decision (to use the members of the Maquis to replace the officers dead in giving them the same privileges than her own ranked officers and for some of them, some higher positions within the crew/ranks & positions more important positions with the bonus (private quarters), commits to her and only her, as she represents the Federation in the DQ. And this situation will last the time of their journey, well insisting that once ‎out of there and back in ‎the lap of Federation, in AQ. none of them could argue, by virtue of their recent situation, for a retroactive application of these privileges when they begin their new life, as a civilian or as a Starfleet officer (what is very highly doubtful but well!). A reminding may be helpful before the landing in itself, on Earth.

I know that for some of you, this part is not important but believe me, it is..., especially once they will have a foot on the ground, on Earth, after 7 years of freedom where they were considered approachable by their Starfleet "colleagues", and that Starfleet's Security officers acting on behalf of the Federation will welcome & inform them that their status of wanted criminal is unchanged and that pending a trial to decide their fate, they will be imprisoned or under house arrest. somwhere.
This might be a shock to some of them. That's why a reminding from Janeway just before landing would be a pretty good idea, especially for lower decks! :D

    2) I would have loved what First Officer was Lt Com. Cavit. Especially, his attitude on (a Riker bis = 100% Starfleet? or Starfleet but a little maverick when necessary and assuming it.) and outside (very respectful like Spock ,Tuvok or Kim - minus his attitude in the Disease - or seducer like Chakotay, Riker or a nonchalant/casual like Tom Paris) the Bridge with his Captain. Same for the human doctor (was he like Leonard Mc Coy?, like a male version of Kate Pulaski?, like Julian Bashir?, like a male version of Beverly Crusher?, like our Doctor but with more empathy? or like Phlox?)?

In short, I would have seen their professional/personal relationship with Janeway in order to compare with Chakotay and the Doctor. Some for the Chief Engeneer and the Chief Operation Officer.

I don't think they would have people just confined to quarters (potentially for 75 years) simply along for the ride.

I never said that the members of Maquis would be confined to quarters somewhere on Earth permanently for 75 years - or more - but they could be shortly, while awaiting trial (because yes, according to Memory Alpha Wikia or a similar website dedicated to the show - I will try to find the right passage, promise! -, the idea was originally planned in the first frame of the scenario and ran for awhile but finally, because of lack of time & eventually, the will to let fans decide of the fate of former Maquis crew, it was sadly abandonned! -> hey, Adm. Janeway having erased the past 26 years, everything is possible, including a happy future or a more or less long stay in a criminal colonny - depends if Janeway manages to convince her pairs! - for Chakotay and his friends minus Torres, of course, right?!).

Plus, 1) even if the charges (of terrorism) against the former members of the Maquis may seem exaggerated (even if they surely killed some non-Cardassians when necessary, like Harry's best friend/relative, I don"t remember, sorry!:) but he
should not be the only victim of the Maquis!), they are very serious and still very current when Voyager will come home (I guess that in some civilzations regardless the qadrant, these charges would deserve death penalty but the Federation of the Planets seems to reject this option but isolation or forced labor in a federal penal colonny may be worse!) and 2) it is not because Janeway and Owen Paris would judge that Chakotay, B'Elena, Michael, etc... have already enough paid for their past actions and that they deserve to be pardonned or at less, to have a weak punishment, that this judgment will be shared by the others members of Starfleet Command! (besides, did you notice that even perfectly informed by Janeway's reports after "A message in the Bottle" from s4, on the role of the members of the Maquis on board as "replacement officers" and their good service records, the organization (aka Starfleet Command) took great care to remain silent about an eventual pardon or anything to reassure them about their future, once back on Earth, despite the ensured & repeated requests made by Janeway on this important subject during the 3 following years?! Worst, admirals seem to still consider the former members of the Maquis as criminals to the biggest Janeway's regret (and even, anger). So no, I don't think I exaggerate when I say that Starfleet (still acting on behalf of the Federation) won't give to Chakotay and Cie, a preferential treatment when returning to Earth and Janeway became Admiral (with Adm.Owen Paris) will have to use all her persuasive powers to secure the release and the serenity for the future of her friends.
-> both non-canon novels & fanfictions expect that she will succeed in this task (in fanfictions, the most of them will return to the civilian life, including Chakotay who will live in reservations, still in States or in South America and return to a quiet & meditation life, and B'Elena will work as a civilian Engineering adivser for Starfleet with Tom, still a Starfleet officer), even if I find it unrealistic in practice!

The person who initially started this idea mentioned them being confined to quarters

Ayala. The background characther of the entire series that deserved more than two lines on those 7 years. I would love to have seen him on the exploration teams... in despite the fact that IIRC he doesnt was a professional actor.
