I think it would have been interesting to see more of the original crew. Would have been a good gut punch to get to know them a little bit and then have them all get killed off.
Here's how I'd have done it.
Keep the main crew on for several episodes, with the Maquis aboard confined to quarters etc.
Gradually Janeway loses more and more crew and has no choice but to approach Chakotay to ask for his people to help them in exchange for their freedom.
I don't think they would have people just confined to quarters (potentially for 75 years) simply along for the ride.
According to Memory Beta, his name was Honigsberg.
I always imagine that he looked like Brian Johnson of AC/DC.![]()

Ayala. The background characther of the entire series that deserved more than two lines on those 7 years. I would love to have seen him on the exploration teams... in despite the fact that IIRC he doesnt was a professional actor.

Though I have kind of come to love Ayala as the security guard who never talks, like in "Harvey Birdman"
I agree. I especially liked Stadi. Here scene with Paris in the shutlecraft is pretty good and you could in theory even keep her alive on the show and not kill her. She could have been reasigned to the same room as that Rollins guy who never returned in any future shows and they didn't even kill him like the other bridge crew. He got referenced once or twice and that was it. Both could have shown up more along with Carrey and Wildeman plus Suder and Seska as the main reacurring cast.
I know they created the Hogan character who I think was basically doing the Carry role but he never made a big impact on me and the most memorable thing he did was to be eaten by a dinosaur. VOrik and Celes were good but Celes was criminally underused only being in 2 episodes.

One or two, if I remember right.Did Ayala even have one line of dialogue throughout the run of the show? I don't recall him ever saying a single word.

For my part, I would have liked to see the original crew, even the time of a whole episode, before some of them to be killed during the Kazon's attack, for at least one time, the joy & curiosity to see Capt. Janeway in action in an environnement 100% Starfleet. And then, to see people for 1 to 2 min. then go, has always seemed incredibly unfair to said actors.
I don't know how I never thought of that. I now need to hear someone mention how Ayala and Morn were always arguing on DS9 before Ayala defected to the Maquis.I see him as Voyager's answer to Morn.
